Illegal to Cruise on Neutral

The owners manual says to not cruise on Neutral and that it is illegal in some states. I'm just wondering why and more importantly, does cruising on Neutral(say when you are coming up on traffic or a red light bad for the engine?

Its not bad for the engine. You can stay in neutral when stopped at a red light but at a cruise its dangerous, cause you might not be able to react fast enough to get out of the way of any danger.

It's almost impossible for them to know that you are coasting in neutral thesedays. But I remember when I was growing up, people would put the car in neutral and turn the engine off when coasting down long hills. They said that they were saving gas, but in reality it doesn't use any less gas since you have to apply throttle to restart the motor. I remember cops pulling people over and using the neutral law to give tickets. Come to think of it, it would be really funny to get a ticket for "driving with the car off".

For me it's a safety issue and not a law issue. I can't react when in neutral and my car will roll a lot farther if hit.

Who does that anyways? Downshift and save your brakes.

it's so you could act when a car pulls in front of you.

It's not recommended, but who's gonna catch doing this?

You know **** sex is illegal in GA, but everyone does it. (i think it's illegal for the reason that GA is conservative state and don't like the same sex sex.)

lol

Brake pads and rotors are cheaper then drivetrain parts.

Lots of dumb laws out there... The sex-related ones in conservative states are some of the funniest.

That is the most likely response. Not necessarily the correct response.

Check out this Sanford Fl law. Its actually a seminone county law here I believe but its real

Stage nudity is banned, with the exception of "bona fide" theatrical performances. Violating this ordinance results in a $100 fine.

They did this to try and get rid of the nuddy bars; Thats when the nuddy bars started doing mcbeth in the nude... LOL

My take is to use the brakes to slow down the car, but I always downshift as well (with rev-match or double-clutch if necessarY), so that the car is in the proper gear if I do need to react. I don't really use the downshift/engine braking to slow the car though...
