Cams - What may go wrong because of them?

Cams - What may go wrong because of them?
I am thinking of putting 264's or 272's.
I would like to know what the downside to cams is.
What may go wrong because of them?
What cams do we have standard?

If you live in a state where emissions testing takes place, cams may jeopardize your ability to pass the test without having to retune the car specifically for the test.

Lost in low end power? I think it's the opposite. Low end power will improve. I drove my buddy's evo with 264/272 and it felt alot fast than mine on the low end. And when it's on boost, ahhhh, too much faster.

Just make sure you have a reputable shop do the install. All should be fine mechanically, Some cams do require valvetrain work. HKS do not. Wonderful mod for power increase, very noticable.

Just remember, all mods need tuning... get the supporting software for your cams, and also get the adjustable cam gears to allow more fine tuning... the most obvious answers in regards to "what may go wrong with cams" is answered... lumpy idle, lost power, etc... but here is something to think about that's less obvious.. whether the cams/tuning was done properly or not, the stress to the engine is increased, resulting in shorter engine life... my 4G63 in my 2nd gen DSM quit after 135,000 miles on the odometer due to mods (even with regular scheduled maintenance and proper tuning), whereas my friend's almost stock GST is still running, with more than 160,000 miles on the odo... well at least the bright side is, I drive an evo now, and hes still stuck with the eclipse... lol

If you have cam gears you can pretty much tune the car any way you want it driveablity wise using 264s or a combo setup. I haven't tuned on any straight 272's but I would say you can do the same. Honestly if they are put in right and if they aren't to agressive on the lift and duration with any brand you will not have to worry about the drivablity. I believe this is one of the reasons alot of people go with HKS.

Just remember.. like everything else in life... there is an equation to balance... you gain some, you lose some... same scenario with modding cars
you want a big turbo for drag racing? you lose street drivability
you want killer handling for autocrossing? you lose street driving comfort (in most cases)
you want a 9 second evo? be prepared to break parts and have the $$ for replacements
you want to date the most beautiful woman? Buy another car, she probably wont appreciate riding in the EVO haha
the list goes on and on...

264 264 actually increase your off boost power....according to AMS test page..there is no down side to 264 idle is great but emissions, might questionable..

HKS 264 Intake 264 Exhaust
Peak HP: 323.1
Peak TRQ: 333.0
Spool up on street: As good as stock (3.2K RPM), with off boost power the same if not better than stock.
Thats why i went 264... lots more torque down low!!
