How To - Use Toluene to boost your octane
#31
I just tried it and added 1 gal. tolulene to 4 gal 93 pump and I dont notice much difference, but I didnt want to take any chances, I have a big race tonight with my nemisis in the wrx... so anyways, to simplify things, with a little algebra I made the eqn: (5/16)G=T where G equalls gallons of 93 pump gas and T equalls gallons of tolulene needed. This eqn only really works if your using 93 pump and want a total of 98. Can someone tell me what this car runs on? The manual says 98, Ive heard 94 is fine... but Ive never seen 98 so I cant imagine that's what it is... but like I said, this time I didnt want to take any chances..
Oh by the way, a great way to solve the problem of the tolulene eating all you plastic and rubber because it is so intense is to add a 2.49 bottle of Lucas injector cleaner. Its not really much of a cleaner so much as it is an oil for the fuel system. check it out, turn the bottle upside down and see how slowly the bubble moves in comparison to that of normal injector cleaners. It says on the bottle that it is supposed to lubricate the upper cylendar, and so I premixed it into the gallon of tolulene and everything is fine. From past experience I really do trust Lucas products, and now I don't have any fear of hurting my baby. anyways, that was long enough...

I don't have any evo experience yet, when I had the b5 s4, i tried some tolulene in my tank and noticed a slight difference. Compared to the amount of damage that tolulene is supposed to do to your engine, I don't think the gains are worth it... although, back before the b6 chassis came out, the fastest S4 ran tolulene and supposidly took off several tenths in the 1/4.

I don't think you'll see any dfifference at all above a 95 octane overall mix without specific tuning. Creating a 98 octane mix will not yield any advantage, but mixing to 95 should.
You don't need to worry about adding any additional lubricants as toluene / xylene are just hydrocarbons and unless you go beyond a 40% toluene / xylene mix the existing gas lubricants are fine.
Do a search there's a ton of info.

btw you might wanna make sure you have an oil catch of some sort before using tolulene. I think it contributes to more aggressive washdown in the cylendars, because after using about a 1:4 mix of it my catch can has accumulated about.... oh 2-3 ounces of oil. It never has cought much but drops before and still hasn't since. Im telling you that it must be the tolulene, and I used lucas cylendar lubricant (injector cleaner) in the same tank too. Im just tellin you because I would hate to think of all of that oil in my intake manifold. Just some help..

So in conclusion, after about 4/5 threads I read through about fuel additives, is this what I got correct?
Tolulene/Xylene good for performance, need add more lubricants if going over 45% ratio. But in the long run, cost about the same as if you purchase 98 octane gas?
So what should I do to add them? Just add them in while I fuel up next time?

I've used 1 gal. of Tolulene with about 5 gal. of 93 oct. and noticed a little better giddy-up! Boost seems to hit a little harder, a little sooner and smoother. Just my $.02, but it went from 88 degrees 1 day, to 53 degrees the day I put the Tolulene in the tank.

well i have read a bunch threads on this mix and dont know what to do.
any input from people using it all the time? i was going to us it at fill up because im running a bigger set up now. i will not use more than a gallon a time or just a little more to raise the rating up a little.. do you have to add oil to the gas even if our just using a gallon or so?
so is the long term issues or are there any? ill bu 104 or 105 and crank up the boost.
thanks for the input

I've only used it short term, but if you are going long term, I especially would use it... very expensive fuel choice for a daily driver thou, hopefully just a track/weekend car. the tolulene will cost at least 10 bux a gal. every time you fill up and the cheap lucas oil (injector cleaner, works great) is about 2-3. but for the long run, most definately, cuz you will end up eating up your hoses if its used all the time without any thing to re-moisturize the rubber. (not good for the cylendars either, no cleaners, you will get alot of carbon)

I've used it in a couple cars, one of which runs 30+psi of boost with ~50% toluene and 50% 92 octane gas. Never a problem with it but it doesn't get daily driven. The other car runs 17 psi of boost on an N/A engine block with 10% toluene, daily driver for years, never a problem. If you have any chemistry knowledge you can see that toluene is a lot like gasoline, it is not going to cause problems with the engine or fuel system in mediocre amounts.
I don't leave the 50% mix in the tank of the race car though, I drain the fuel system when I'm done.I'll start experimenting with the new 05 RS for autocrosses and hillclimbs, with the knock control I don't see the need to use it every day.

im thinking of using it for my daily drivers. im tired of 91 **** gas. and i dont want to take a second out on my house either.. so im going to either the mix or the alcohol injection... hmm unsure

Wildrice:
You bring up some good points with good experience in the Bimmer. One thing I wish Mitsubishi would do overall is not run the EVO so pig rich. If there is one way to get gasoline into your oil, its by running it too rich. I'd take a hit in boost (bring the HP back down) in order to run a bit leaner overall.
As far as Toluene, and Xylene are concerned, they are probably the best bang for the buck octane boosters out there. However, with anything that you add to the EVO's gas tank, just be aware of what its doing (and this thread is good for that) and use with caution.

jcnel.
