do you have any oil analysis data to share to confirm this claim or are you just guessing? not trying to be a d**k, just like to se a little evidence before i just take someone's word for it.

Think about if the Dealer sells it for $5 it is probably no more than a $3 filter....Now that being said is the dealer filter a bad filter no but regular oil isn't either but Mitsu puts synthetic oil in at the factory. So why use a plain old filter when better filters are out there..

I'd like to see used oil analysis (UOAs) on this. I agree there are better filters, but I don't totally buy into the M1 filters being better. M1 has a name from it's synthetic oil (Which is NOT the most superior oil out there).

For longevity and oil intervals 10K+ I use Amsoil EaO filters. For the Evo I'll stick with my "cheapy" filter since I only run between 3-5K miles for oil changes.

From one perspective, the finer, more expensive oil filters have been known to cause too much pressure loss across the filter (maybe or maybe not true on EVOs, but was a documented problem on 4G63 DSMs which can cause phantom knock from ticking lifters):

If you are changing your oil on a regular basis (3k or so), I don't think you will ever find a difference between an OEM oil filter and an expensive one.

Your not being a d**k no problem. I have never used an oil analysis but I can say that after checking the oil on my truck with 8K on the oil it was still clean and consumption was down as compared to other filters I've tried. I'm not saying that the M1 filter is the very best but for me I won't put a cheap filter on my Evo knowing that the M1 will keep the oil cleaner longer and its easy to get locally. I'm sure that are a few filters out there that are better but for $10 and easily found its at the local parts store and not at satan(dealership lingo from DSM days). You don't use cheap oil in your Evo so why use a cheap filter? For a mere $5 more I'll take the insurance.

there is a thread about this already....about this very same thing...check below.

i have provided information regarding the "phantom knock" and why i stayed with the factory filter.

there is also plenty of good information about oil filters and their filtration properties. SPECIFICALLY POST #9

hope that helps you...

Agree about the 3K but that is really kind of a waste because of the longer drain intervals of good oil plus the better filter will keep it cleaner longer. Phantom knock from the lifters was from bad lifter design(orrifice being to small) and if any DSM forum should be qouted its DSMTALK not that puny board.

i always like the piece of mind i get from changinf every 3K even if it's not needed. i'd rather change it too much than not enough. and i just use the factory filter since it was designed for the evo and is valved for the oil pressure that our cars run at.

I couldn't agree with you more hondafan. I have noticed that on my '05 evo, I will see 90psi of oil pressure at WOT. Many other cars don't see more than 70 or so. If the factory filter was designed specifically for the evo, the filter will also be designed to put up with that kind of oil pressure. Plus, keeping the oil changed every 3k miles should help keep from making the oil filter a major issue. My .02

I'm going to change my oil today and have to go buy the oil/filter right now. Will I be alright if I go to a Mitsubishi dealership and tell them I need a filter for an 06 Evo, or is there a part number I should remember so they don't give me the wrong one?

They will know. I think there are only 2 main oil filters for their cars.
