Question Oil change - 5qts and still low!?

Hey guys, so I did my oil change today. Removed and installed a new OEM filter, filled up 4.5 quarts of oil and checked the dip stick. It was on the bottom of the first mark so I pour the remaining 0.5 quarts and I'm still low. I thought we take about 4.7 with filter change. What am I missing here? I don't want to pour more oil and I have checked for leaks - nothing. Any ideas? I called my buddy with an Evo and he told me he puts most of the time 5 qts unless he doesn't change the filter.

P.S. I put Mobil 1 and this thing is thin, so its hard to see but on the light I can tell where is wet and dry.

No you shouldnt have put in the extra in the first place, putting in too much oil can be just as bad as not enough. More than likely you're not checking the oil on level ground. Is the car on or off also? Once you drain the oil completely and put in the 4.5 and you have no leaks you should be good.

let the car idle until it is done with the warm up. Shut off the car then wait 10 minutes. Then check it. You are checkin it on a cold engine. Also as stated above do it on level ground.

The above poster is 100% correct. Oil capacity is measured when oil is fully circulated in the engine AND on level ground.

so 4.5 is what we should be putting in? I've always bought the gallon jug of Mobile 1 from Walmart and just kept checking the dip stick. I would rather know exactly how much I should put in.

Bare in mind 4.8 is the factory spec on a completely empty engine. More often than not with the average oil drain at least .1 or .2 liters will probably be left back in the engine so put in a little less and then top off to suit.

Thanks for your input guys, but here is the problem, I have checked the oil at four different times, warm and cold and on level ground, and it was still low (bottom mark). I checked my manual and everything (engine, filter, oil cooler) comes up to 5.64 qts. I added another 0.5 qt and now its okay right at the top mark.
At the time of draining my oil, I tilted the car and let it empty until it barely dripped. So how come I had to add so much oil?

Last but not least, if I have put too much oil, then what should I do? Drive until next oil change or flush it out and do it all over again? Thank you gents!

Drian some, but not all of it.

I've used various filters and it's always taken different amounts. With the OEM filter, I'm usually puting in about 4.7-5.0.

+/- 0.1 or 0.2 is not a big deal.
