Oil change

I'm surprised this one hasn't been covered before in the "How-To" section. Sure it's simple but we all had to learn from someone or somewhere, and it might as well be here.

You can do it without raising the car up. I'll do a write-up without raising it up when I do my next one.

Red face

I think I just n00bed myself...... The guy i bought the car from gave me six quarts of oil, so i figured it was 5.x quarts. So i was readin the owners manual or the cd and I added all the parts that it listed w/ how much oil each one used and it was like 5.4 quarts so thats what i put in. I just checked it and from what I can tell, its hard to see mobil 1 when its fresh, its about an inch over the max line.....

Check you dipstick. There is a reason it is there. It is the best measure of how much you need.

yeah that is wrong!!! I figured it out too...thank goodness not the hard way. My buddy at walmart changes my oil for me. He said the Walmart manual say to use 5.4....and first time I heard it, I was like no freaking way, b/c I recalled the manual saying 4.75. phew!

I'll start doing my own changes when it's warmer outside.

I just did my own oil change for the first time. I put 4.75 quarts while the car was still on ramps. When I checked the dipstick, the oil is really light, but it seems like I added way too much! Whats the deal? I drove around for a bit but that didn't really lower the dipstick mark too much.

Help...

You could use the nice and messy let a little out method. When I over fill one of my cars (it does happen), I just use a clean container/funnel and drain it out. Then refill it properly with the reclaimed oil less the over fill.

BTW I always drop the car down to level ground to fill it.

So even though I drained all my oil and put in exactly 4.7 quarts, its possible that I overfilled?

Just asking cuz I'm really confused...
