Repairing Damaged and Faded Carbon Wings
#227
I have no clearcoat on top and the inside of the sides is peeling. Basically just needs a clear im guessing. Problem is that the *** who had it before me tried to wax the bare carbon i guess so i have wax swirls on it. Geesh. Guess a slight sand on it would remove it all.

This is a great question. Can anyone help out here? Id like to do mine soon, I hate the way it brings down the look of the car so much.

The thing about clear epoxy resin is that it yellows over time when exposed to the sun. I used to use it for certain projects, and you could really see it over time. You might not notice it on a black carbon fiber, though.
I just used a clear spray after the carbon had been prepped.
@re-rx7: prep your cf by lightly sanding until it's uniform. Use a really high grit sandpaper, if all you've got is swirls. Something like a 1600 or 2000. Clean with acetone. Spray your clear on it, then wax.

I started this project this past weekend (1/18/14). Still sanding a bit each day, there's a lot of epoxy on the top of my wing, and I can definitely see where it's yellowed. In fact, you can see the yellowish tint in the dust as I wipe it up between passes. Unfortunately, the insides of my wing near the bottom were also getting bad, so I need to do the insides, and I might as well do the bottom too, while I'm at it.
I'm debating sanding the sides too when I've finished taking the epoxy off the wing.
I expect this will take me a few weeks of nights and weekends just sanding.

I would suggest wrapping the perimeter of the sides around the carbon fiber first with blue painters tape, and then a layer of duct tape. This will make the tape easier to remove, and the duct tape will provide better protection against inadvertently hitting and sanding away the painted surfaces.
Here's mine after I cleared and removed the duct tape.

I just did this, and it came out really well. Both sides where the wing met the trunk lid (and about an inch or two up from the lid) were in really bad shape with some clear completely gone.
