It would be more of a mess to manage the filter + deal with the oil that is in the filter than to just deal with the little plug, IMO.

Try to suck some out with a vacuum extractor? Maybe through the dip stick tube?

But pulling the drain plug would seem easier if you don't have something to create a vacuum and a container to use for the catch.
