I think it depends entirely on the color of the car.

nemesis - i just flat black spray painted mine. i havent had any problems like UFO but i think thats cause i didnt get a plastic paint (which i believe is thicker). i just used whatever i picked up at autozone. didnt sand anything either. just taped everything up so i wouldnt get it on the car and applied a few coats until everything was smooth and no chrome was showing.
apply coat, waited a few minutes for it to dry a little so i wouldnt get drips, applied another coat, waited, and did a third.

red looks good on certain colors, IMO. and depends on what other stickers or things you have on your car..... otherwise it sticks out like a sore thumb.

dude that red emblem on the white car looks like crap IMO its way to low. raise it up and it would look good.

badges...we dont need no stinking badges.

no badges or the black. but it really depends on the color of the car and your choice. I think I might go with a gloss black on mine. I'm still trying to decide if that will look good on graphite grey.

I think red looks good on black, however, i wouldn't mind having a black badge for my tarmac.

I blacked my out along with the keyhole and front emblem. Looks nice on rally red with blacked out headlights.

I used a low gloss black. There are some pics in my sig.

I ordered a red badge for my BBY but I am holding off to put it on because I am wating to see if I am going to keep this trunk. I am hoping to buy a trunk/spoiler combo so I am going to wait and see what I come up with on that first. I just bought the 1999 Galant red badge for $12 at the dealer. It has the two snap in tabs and the two sided tape but all I will have to do is dremel those off since ours don't have the holes in the trunk for the badge.
