i just got my alpine hu and kca420i and hopefully will be installing this weekend, so i'll let you guys know my take on it... i've always really liked alpine, and considering the evo has such a crappy stock hu, this seemed like a perfect solution.

and the forums on www.ipodlounge.com really provide a lot of good information on this as well as other car audio options for your ipod.

I've had my IVA-D300 touch screen and an i420 with original ipod for nearly a couple of months now. I can say the following...

Yes, the full touch screen makes a difference.
Yes, the Alpine/ipod solution rules over all other ways of playing audio in my car imho.

Even with the compression, the media xpander actually makes the end result VERY close to my best CDs. I have a nice CD changer that I don't even feel the need to keep in the car now, and that is quite a statement from a gut that normally can't stand the way MP3s sound. If I want to get the best possible sound, I can always pop a DVD-audio disk in the deck.

If you have an ipod, it's damned near a stupid move not to get an ai-net alpine h/u.
