IPOD Mounting suggestions
#17
Interested in doing this also.
To the guys with the FM modulator, how is the sound quality? Also, arent you guys worried about vibrations? All of the mounting options seem difficult to access the ipod. Has anyone ever thought about mounting on the dash? Although that may seem like a terrible idea in the event of an accident (turning the ipod into a missle).

okay I trid a couple of spots and solutions here is how I settled.
1. ran wire into glovebox:
Pros: arent many after a day of opening and closing the thing to switch songs,
Cons: long reach I know my satallite radio is in there now. Hard to see the screen. Hard to mount a dock so pluggin in out can be time consuming
2. On the Dash
Pros: Dock can be mounted. can be easily seen line of sight. Easy removal and placement (utilizing the dock)
Cons: Lots of wire hanging in front of dash. Unless you run them dwn defroster vents. While in any other gear than fifth you have to remove you hand from the shifter to change songs.
3. on the center console (right side like pictured above)
Pros: Dock can be mounted. Easily switch between songs with pointer finger while shifting.Easy removal and placement (utilizing the dock)
Cons: on the right sight side screen cant be seen b/c of Shifting hand
4. Where I finally decided to put mine.
Pros: No wires once final installation occurs. Easy the change songs with shifting hand. Screen can be seen but not in line of sight. Easy removal and placement (utilizing the dock) for long parking dock can be removed and ashtray placed in (for the meantime till I do what I want to with it (then it will simple be a ovan hole in the dash
Cons: expensive solution. not in direct line of sight.
after trying all of these I settled for what was the cleanest install what was important to me was that no wire would be exposed and I could easily remove it and change songs.

I did mine in the glove box linked with the KCA 420 to my Alpine deck, it works awesome, but if you do aux input, that wouldn't be the best way to do it, because you can't control the ipod from in the glovebox very well after all...

and as far as FM modulators go, I owned the belkin unit, and the itrip.
Great in the country
Ok in the suburbs
Paperweights in any major citys
The itrip is terrible to use while driveing b/c it is controled through the ipods menu and control system. but you can use it on any channel through the FM specturm.
The belkin unit is better b/c is employs a toggle switch that changes between 4 stations. easily programed on any headunit. but then you are limited to 88.1 88.3 88.5 88.7. And i always left it on good thing AAA batteriers arent too expensive.

I am working on putting my ipod mini dock in a stealth location. One area I think will work it behind the area between the front of the arm rest and the back of the cupholders. I will be placing the dock underneath the plastic and cutting a hole for the ipod to fit in.
