Possibly Repainting Car.

I was considering repainting my 03 LY VIII to a flat black color by myself. I have the tools necessary and I was wondering if there was anyone on the forums who could give me an idea of what outcome I should have. I plan on handsanding the car just to mar the surface and then doing about 3 coats of a flat black to give it a very stealth look. If anyone has an idea of what I can expect from a job like this help me out or if anyone has any tips. I am considering just keeping my stock color since I realie the value will go down but if anyone has any suggestions, it is open for discussion.

Thanks, Tom.

I think you should go for it. It'd be a fun learning experience. If it looks like crap let a professional respray it.

How about trying a small part first, just to make sure you will like it. The hardest part is taping off stuff you dont want to be painted.

If you feel you have the ability and a large dust free room, knock yourself out. Ive painted in spraybooths (not automotive mind you) and dust is still a possibility. Plus, you have to consider things like painting inside door jams, interior sheet metal and in crevices. Its not just mask and spray, there is A LOT of prep in painting something as complex as a car.

Do it! I painted my mirrors flat black. I'd like to do the whole car too... Duplicolor paints will do the trick.

Sand
Clean
Mask
Primer
Paint

Hardest part is taping off stuff??? PREP is the key to any paint job, but when dealing with a matte finish you must, and i cant stress this enough, must have a dust free enviroment. You cant buff out a matte finish. And taping is the easiest thing to painting a car, takes me about 45 minutes to tape a complete up, completes are a breeze. I have PM'd ohtree a novel about painting his car, and I think he could do it, patience and good prep is all it would take. Oh and I am a professional painter.

Also do not forget just cause its a matte finish DOES NOT mean it doesnt have clear on it. You still clear matte finishs only your clear has a flattening agent in it to make it matte. And BlackMamba is right, there is a lot to painting anything, especially a car. PREP is key. Later
