Well. Ideally there would be no rear end evil.
However sh*t happens.
Picture this. Your're backing up and you hit a concrete pole or something (like those at supermarkets or bestbuy or whatever)
You don't have a crash bar and you open your trunk and the walls of your trunk are protruding inwards like large stalagmites.
If you had a crash bar there's a better chance it wouldn't happen and that the crash bar itself would just be damaged.
The crash bar is really only designed for low speed impacts. If you hit anything considerable, it wouldn't make any difference at all.
However, you don't want to "bump" something at low speed and end up with a whole ton of damage.
