Modified USDM Crash bar for JDM IX rear bumper [pics]

So I got my JDM IX bumper today thanks to Gruppe-S.

I don't particularly like the idea of "removing" the factory crash bar cause even at low speeds if someone hits you it'll push the trunk area in and cause some unnecessary sheetmetal damage.

So i modified it.
Cut the mounts off of it, removed the flange from the mounts and welded the flange onto the crash bar itself. Fits very tight but it does fit. bolts right on.

I can't find my digicam flash card reader so no more detailed pics. I love the JDM bumper though.

Did the sides of the crash bar have to be modified? Looks clean. Any way to point out where the flanges are that you modified? I want a JDM rear but am curious on how to modify the bumper. I appreciate the pics and the info. Thanks for posting it up.

Although that defeats the purpose of the crash bar, its better than nothing and/or buying that $300 steel one that theyre selling around here

Nothing except for the "legs" need to be modified. No edges etc.
Once you have the crash bar off, you'll see. It is simply a straight bar with 2 legs/flanges on it.

No more pics. It's on the car already.

I fabricate my own stuff at home. TIG welder, metal cutting tools etc.
I don't send stuff out anymore. Too many bad experiences. I prefer to do it at home.

It doesn't defeat the purpose of the crashbar. The "legs" of the crash bar aren't designed for anything except a spacer. They weren't designed to crumple, simply to space the bar itself.

There is still a small gap between the crash bar and the sheetmetal of the trunk. So at low speed impacts, it'll still protect the trunk area from caving in.

wasn't aware anyone was offering a crash bar for the IX bumpers. it may defeat the purpose but at least the bumper has some support behind it for low speed fender benders.

how much did you need to cut off? my friend can weld, so i can have him TIG it, but i wanted to know how much you took off.

I did this myself.
I think there are a few people who "offer" them. at like $350+

And again, it doesn't defeat the purpose of the crash bar. It's the same crash bar but shortened. Same mounting points, bolt in.

I cut off the legs that are spot welded to the flange going to the car.
A MIG would be much easier and faster than a TIG. You'll have to fill some spaces.
