Will regular spray paint hold up if layered with high heat paint on valve cover??

So I want to paint my valve cover, and I am big on DIY, so I want to do it myself. It will save some money when compared to powder coating too.

But my question is, would regular spray paint (states "do not exceed 200°"; I checked VC temps, they are +-200° depending on location) hold up if layered with high heat spray paint?

For example: 1) High heat primer, 2) Regular spray paint, 3) High heat clear.

I think it should work. If regular spray paint is sandwiched between high heat spray paint, it, in my theory, should hold up. I want to buy the paint and test it on some spare sheet metal I have, but I want some logical opinions before I spend my money.

Another reason for trying to use regular spray paint is that with the high heat stuff it is pretty limited on color and style. Also, right now this is just an idea, I may not even paint it if I can't find a color I like. I found a couple of colors that may work, they look good on the top of the can, but that is small and not in my engine.

I believe the high heat stuff will work...but if you have the opportunity to powder coat the stuff, then I would no doubt recommend that.

Kerr, I took the same route that you mentioned back in high school on a friend's Integra valve cover (not as hot as ours probably) and it held up great until he sold the car years later. I even did a Jun-style fade on it. For better odds, use high quality paints like Rust-Oleum brand or sub-brands (Painters touch, American Accents etc.) If it looks like crap down the road, oh well just polish or powercoat it. Powdercoating is pretty cheap on a valve cover BTW.

Use brake parts paint. It's designed to get alot hotter than your valve cover ever could.

the key is really to use the highest temp primer you can find and really take your time and get real solid layers down, letting each dry as much as you can bear in between. doing it is not hard at all, the hard part is just a matter of patience

I know high heat will work, I believe the cover gets just over 200 degrees. That temp is the max temp for normal paint, so my question was if the normal paint would hold up if layered with high heat paint.

im not 100% sure if that would work. since you are just putting a few layers between, i would think that once the 1st layer hits that temp , the other layer (reg. paint) will start to fade. I put regular paint on my 2g Eclipse Manifold, it was white and blue. but started to fade and turn brownish.

The primer will not act as an insulator. Any paint you put on there will be the same temp as the valve cover. Just use paint for engines or brakes, they come in many colors.

I had the chance to powdercoat my brake calipers but they gave me an estimate of 65 per caliper, so i ended up using the duplicolor high heat enamel and it is holding like a champ!
