Removing Paint / Polishing Rims (Rota D2)
So you have a set of rims you want to polish? Or change the color of? Let me start by saying DON'T DO IT!! GIVE UP NOW! Pay a shop to do it!! It's a very painful and time consuming process that sucks A LOT. Get them sand blasted or something, ANYTHING.
Anyway , start with a set of rims.
Next you take this stuff:
Aircraft Paint Stripper (auto zone)
And a paint Brush (that will not melt from chemicals) (home depot)
And gloves, mask and eye protection (not pictured) (home depot). This is really important, the aircraft stripper is some really really nasty stuff. It takes skin off better than paint.
Apply a lot of this stuff while making strokes in only one direction. How you apply it makes a big difference.
Next you need a metal brush such as this (home depot). Use it scrape the paint off. Also use a hose or power washer to get the bulk off first. It will take many coats to get this stuff off.
It will soon look like this:
You EVENTUALLY get something like this:
The surface of the rim looks like this:
So you will sandpaper (4 levels between 400 and 2000) and maybe a few levels of steel wool to get some of that remaining paint off.
After a lot of work, and wet sanding you’ll get this: (the more time you spend, the better it gets)
Now this part of the project is key: Be persistent. I got a little over one spoke done and then kept putting off working on them. I came across a set of rims I needed to own and now I need to get rid of these rims. It sucks selling a project that's 80+% finished . They will look amazing for whoever finished them! Take offers, PM me haha
