Chris Cessna's 9 Second STM Built Stock-Motor RS
#166
Hah, good catch. There is absolutely no way that a head gasket could separate, and fluid wouldn't force itself through. A fluid only needs maybe a .001" gap to seep through. I also don't know how you would be able to tell this happened, since the second you undo a head stud, the gasket will fluff back up to close to its original state, it won't stay flat. You would have to measure the distance between the head and block, before and after re-installing the exact same head gasket with to test for any differences, since each head gasket is bound to be .001 - .0001" different just from materials.
The head lifted right when the head studs let go, you can see on the differences between the two blocks pics. On mine there are sections that are blackened from where a head lifted and fouled everything a tad, where on the other block it was a much uglier picture. I would wager cessnas price tag on that cars 9 second run was a warped deck, head, and the valves touched at least one piston from that whole combo being pushed as hard as it was. As for my measurements those were done by a actual machine shop, local guys built a few six second local dragsters so I think they know what they are up too. And I know if mine looked the way it did and what damage was done to it, it would simply be a smart bet that a car that went about half a second faster on a much bigger turbo with the same basic set up the damage would be much worse. I'm not gigging anyone on it, it's the stock block lotto and besides the ricers OEM block I think chris and I played it the longest and thats the price you pay. Emery told me that when I told him to put the turbo on, when I told him to up the boost. So no my gasket wasn't coming apart and I was driving it all day everyday, the layers in it started to come apart, the studs stretched, the head lifted and like all other motors I've killed it just shut off kinda anti climaticly all with a drive home to work, happened all at once and she lost that seal and was done. I hope chris don't sell this car though and gets a new block, as he and I still have a race between the two of us that needs to happen. Best of luck for next year chris, emery, shawna, and mark the killer of T cases sorry but I had to jab a little fun at ya
