How to trim abs plastic safely & cleanly? Gurney Flap

I have a gurney flap which has just to tight a fit (it bends in the middle) The size is 43 1/4

I think if I take off a small amount it will fit that much better

My question is how can I take of just a little bit without damaging the paint and making it a straight cut??

I thought of filing it down but that might make the paint flake, unless its really fine sandpaper or file I guess

I though of a cutoff wheel on a dremmel but its such a small amount I would have to take off that it might chip and not as straight (I've also read that the heat of the wheel on abs plastic has made plastic melt)

or heat it up and use a razor blade and cut straight down

Part of the problem is that it's too thin and fragile

So any info would be greatly appreciated

Heat up razor blade with a torch, heat up the gurney flap with a heat gun (not too much, just to get a bit softer), and do a straight cut. As you mentioned, a die grinder or dremel will melt the plastic and the file MIGHT work, or it might chip the paint. Make sure to heat up the flap too though, it'll make the paint more malleable and less likely to crack.

no its the right way

I wanted to use a heat gun on the gurney flap, how long and is there any chance I might damage the paint?

Feel it by hand, I use a 2 second rule for plastics: Can't hld your hand on it for 2 seconds? It's too hot. You don't want it to be HOT, just warm enough to get the paint more malleable.

dang i put mine on there without trimming! It sits exactly as yours does against the wing. I hope that it doesnt cause any deep scratches within time. For me its too risky to go in there and attempt to trim it after its already been installed. Good luck with yours! show us some before and after pics

Hey, is that a 6ft fence behind there? What kind of tree is that in the background?

+1 on the heat gun. The way I do it is I place my finger next to the area I want to heat up. If you can't withstand the heat, then it's probably too hot. Just soften enough so you don't do damage.

It's a 6 ft with a side of 3 ft fence mown hay in color from home depot Behr Brand

The temp was a nice 76 degrees with a slight breeze from NNE

Anyways

Ya I will definately have to try that tonight. I want to use masking tape to make a clean staight cut heat it with a heat gun per instructions and heat the blade slightly aswell

Don't worry about it scratching the wing over time I doubt it will, my prob is that the gurney flap is 1/4 inch too long to fit properly
