Japan has stringent air quality laws. When cars odometer reaches 75,000 kms(not sure of actual) there is a big jump in registration tax. Big enough jump to encourage buying a new car. No laws against owning old cars, just more expensive to register.

They also have very high taxes for disposing of salvage materials. The island is small and they dont have any place for landfills. I purchased a few front LSD from the tcase. They always sell them with the heavy and unneeded casing. I tried with several sellers to get them to just toss out the casing so i would only have to pay for shipping on LSD itself. One seller confided he would have to pay high disposal fee. and it was cheaper to ship the housing rather than pay the fee. About 40$ for just 10lbs.

fantastic evo 5 man!

Took it to my first track day a couple weeks ago for some Gymkhana. First time I put my RALLIART R01 wheels on... they're hot... and finally swapped out the RS interior with Recaros Pics and vids:

Every time I see a thread like this, I want to move to Japan more and more

With the high registration/inspection costs, does it make a whole lot of sense to own an older car in Japan? I was under the impression that very few people keep older cars for street use because of the higher costs.

For a Japanese person or someone that is registering the car as a "kanji" plate it may be a deterrent. I'm military under SOFA status so I get the "Y" plate, and i have to pay alot less than the"kanji" plates.

Very nice 5. My 4 was beat up when I bought it, like you said about military cars. I wasn't wanting to pay the price dealers want for 4's though, for the amount of money I'm putting into it.
