Yep thats what i would try, at least clear would just coat the existing colour. Where the red can come out any type of red.

next time use Sonax Wheel cleaner
I can get the strong carbotech brake dust off my volks without even scrubbing.

Easy fix, just scuff it up a little with one of those green scrub pads and re-clear. Looks brand new again.
