The question is why not. My car was a daily driver until I bought my Jeep. So it will be hitting the MSR Road Course soon. I know of many EVO owners down here in Texas that run the 255/40ZR17's. It gives more oversteer, which is what we want. Don't knock it till try it......the tire size that it! lol

I dont think 255/40/17 will do anything for you on the stock rim that a 235/45 wont

are you sure you want a narrow contact patch??? I would think a wider tire would have more friction when braking no?

A wider tire does give you more oversteer than the factory size tire. I've had 3 different sets of tires on my car. I have not modified any sways, not even doing the front sway mod to the factory sway. The car does have quicker response and my alignment has also something to do with this. I have more toe in on my rear for road-racing purposes. And yes that as well has changed a bit on cornering.

I only have Hotchkis springs for suspension mods.

In all my years of road-racing, wider = better grip, more oversteer than a narrower tire. Porsche's run 275's, 285's or even 295's stock. They handle like their on rails. Joe's EVO used to run 285's I believe on a race track for more oversteer and quicker response. A race car's worst nightmare on a track is a braking problem or severe understeer.

for WINTER driving, yes, Narrow path is better, TRUST ME, sure you'll have more patch for BRAKING, but the point here is to prevent skidding and slippage, all of which are exacerbated by a larger contact patch in WINTER tires. . .so wider=better in summer, narrow=better in winter.

I know this man, Porsches run 285's on 10" wide rims too. I'm not saying anything bigger then 235 is bad, i'm saying that on an 8 inch rim I dont think going larger then 235 will do anything

Well, I hate to break it to ya, but I do feel the difference. That's what I'm saying. I can feel it in the steering response, accelerating and breaking the tires loose when accelerating out of the apex of a turn...etc. I'm just trying to tell you that there is a difference, because I've driven with these 255's for almost 23K miles. Answer me this.......if everyone is agreeing that you get more grip with a wider tire, why wouldn't you go wider if you wanted more grip?

Quote by NDgsx: 235 x .45=105.3mm
255 x .40=102mm
255's on an 8in wheel has hardly any difference than that of a 10in wheel. Again, alignment also has everything to do with how a car is tuned to respond on a track or on the street.

I'm not trying to argue or anything, but I'm speaking from experience with 255's. I'm not going on a guess here.
