my friend has WS50 on his wrx and they're just insane in the snow. i'm ordering a set tomorrow in 225/50R17, just slightly narrower than stock and i'm putting them on a set of 5zigen FN01C 17x8 that i just bought strictly for the winter. it's best to keep a separate set of wheels with winter tires, so that u can swap them at any time at ur leisure.
someone at the beginning of this thread said they weren't impressed with AWD of the evo....no comment...u were on ADVANS!!! silly rabbit
my friend's buddy SOLD his evo for this same reason - he wasn't impressed with the AWD in snow...on STOCK advans! what's wrong with u ppl, haven't u read that sticker on the driver's door?
anyway, i drove on stock tires in the snow and slush last winter, but i've had enough of that. i want the best snow tire, eventhough i will be driving on dry pavement most of the time, but i just want the best in the case when there IS snow. WS50 is the tire for me.

I had them on my Mini Cooper S, that might explain the size

Although they haven't seen any snow yet (Evo wise), the car drives just fine. I even took it to the track last week and was able to pull 12.4 at 113+ with them on. Crazy.

 

Got to put my Winter Sport M3s to work today. For those who don't know Denver is 19* right now and I got 3" of snow at my apartment. The parking lot was a sheet of ice and I didn't slip once. Great tires!! This is the 2nd winter season on this set.

 

tirerack is apparently out-of-stock on the 235/45/17 wintersport M3's until late december or early january. anyone know where to get a set sooner than that?

I've run Blizzak WS-50's, Dunlop Graspic DS-2's and Michelin Artic alpine snow tires. The blizzak's were the best on the free way but the graspic's were way way better on ice due to how soft they are. The Michelins work good also for a daily winter driver they have a harder compound than both of the others.

 

If you guys really want to get silly, pick up a cheap set of tires with good tread depth and visit your local rally shop.

If they know what they're doing, they can drill bolts into the tread sipes and mount the tire with an inner tube. This gets you tons of grip on low mu surfaces and by running the tube, you can run low tire pressures and not pop the bead off when you hit things.

They have 225/45/17 in stock. I'm about one click away from ordering them myself. Been a tough call although I feel they may be better than the LM-25s I first wanted. Hmm...

 

Tiresavings.com has them but they cost more $159 vs $149 at tirerack.com. I bought them then my friend said can get them in in couple of weeks. Dam, could have saved myself over $100.

 

I cant believe the poster didnt like his conti extreme contacts? I have these on my evo and use them yr round. Last year I plowed threw 10+ inches of snow, stopping in the deep stuff and then flooring it. Never got stuck once and had tons of fun.

For my next tire Im kinda looking at a less winter tire in trade for more dry summer grip.

I dont think you could go wrong using the Conti's in the winter time what so ever.

 

The best is the Hakk 2 or you can get them the Hakk 4.

Just plunked down cash for a set of Nokian RSi, I thought about the more hardcore studded hakka 2 but decided on a better dry performance tradeoff. I suspect it's still gonna be tuff in the cold stuff though! And a 50,000 mile warranty....

 

Has anyone dealt with the Kumho Ecsta ASX's? How are they in light/moderate snow? We get a couple of inches every year here in Jersey. Last year sucked. I didn't have the Evo then so I am really anticipating the 1st snow fall. If I don't get any good reviews for these tires I'm just gonna get the ContiExtremes. Tire rack has them for $113 a piece right now. What are some other tire store wbsites other that Tire Rack? Thanks for the info guys. I always appreciate most of you guys suggestions. I was just looking in Tire Rack and the Avon M550 A/S's are just about the same as the Pirelli PZero Nero M&S's. For the price , I am so about to get these. Any input folks?
