17/18 x 9.5 +38

this is one of those regular old will it fit threads. i don't usually ask these types of questions cuz i usually know the answer but something is bugging me about this fitment.

you guys may notice that lots of wheels come in this size, the gramlight rims particularly the 57f, the enkei rp03, the 5zigen gn+, various volk wheels and i'm sure many more.

275 is best run on a 9.5 inch wide rim, i've been toying with the idea of swapping the very pretty 18s that run an 18 only size of 265 35 to a 17" rim that can run 275 40.

so the question is will the 9.5" fit with a +38 offset and no spacing?

few things to consider: firstly the rim is the problem not the tire, the rim will extend beyond the tire.

secondly the suspension clearence is the issue, not the fender clearence. i mean the fender clearence is an issue... but it's an issue no matter what.

now i'll cite a few examples and see what you guys think:

nils runs 275 on his 18x9.5 +40 enkei nto3s he runs a 17mm spacer in front, no spacer in back. massive fender shaving and some pulling makes everything very snug. mean look, mean car, mean grip and he actually has not ripped his fender liners out.

gt40 runs 275 5zigen 18x9.5 +35 fn01rc and with no spacing. massive fender rolling/bending in back and everything has cleared up fine, his liners are intact to the best of my knowledge.

aspec runs 275 on 17x9.5 +38 gramlight 57f with a 10mm spacer in front for the widebody fenders and a 3mm spacer in the rear just for safety (isn't needed). the fenders are totally shaved in the rear. and of course widebody fenders are in front as mentioned. aspec's liners are rubbed in a few places

so we can see by these two examples (more are VERY welcome) that you can clear a 9.5" wheel in the back with anything as close to +40, nils is running dsm sus so it's not like it's small cakes backthere.

in the front you can either run an overall +30 and clear brakes and sus or an overall +35 and still maintain the same clearences.

my question is if that extra 3MM will make a difference???? will that 3mm in the front make it hit the front sus?

if anything you can space it 3mm in front right? but does that leave you enough threads on the stock studs? SOMEONE LET ME KNOW!!!

I run a 17x9 +35mm with a 3mm spacer in front. I still use the stock lugs with no problems.

For the offsets... If I were to buy another set of rims, I would have gone for a +30 or +32 to avoid the tire rubbing issues, assuming my offset math is right. If you use spacers, you need to be within that range to clear the suspension. To my knowledge, you must have coilovers to fit a 275

The spacer in the front is needed to clear the front stock caliper.

I just got a set of the 5Zigen FN01RC's in 18x9.5, +35 from Adam at Z1. I have Kumho V710's in 285-30 size mounted on them. Initial test fit reveals some decent results with my Tein RA coilovers (note these run a helper spring and 7" free length main). The fronts clear the shock body fine and at my present ride height they also clear the spring perches. I will probably end up with a 5mm spacer up front b/c I will most likely be at a lower ride height with the stiffer springs I am going to run. I would NOT run these wheels with a spacer and the stock lug studs. I am getting 8 full turns now w/out a spacer.

Out back clearance with the trailing arm and shock is very good. Fender clearance is going to be a bit rough though. I haven't had the suspension through its travel yet to check if it tucks in enough with the camber curve. Obviously I have some major rolling to do.

Please note all the fitting I have done is on a car on jack stands. My front test fit is only on the coilover/knuckle assy on my workbench since the tranny/tc are out and the susp just got bushings too. The rear side pic is taken at 2" below ride height and at an unknown camber setting.

I'm gonna try and attach a couple pics.

Ref. to gt40: if he can fit with a +35, i'm pretty sure you'll get away with +38. From what I recall, the closest thing to it in the front (ignoring the fenders) would be the front strut. If you're getting coilvers anyway, it shouldn't be a problem. On my MR strurts, you'll need like a 10mm spacer or something.

As far as I can tell (just been looking at my car) there should be loads of room in the rear (i'm talking 17's though).

The liners are going to be a bit iffy. If you're not particularly attached to them, obviously it won't be a problem but if you are, I think it's going to be too close to call cos it's going to be the tyres rubbing them.

In any case, a 3mm spacer shouldn't really reduce the fastening capacity much. Depending on the wheel, of course. Some have really thick hubs for some reason. Also, the majority of the load is carried by a smaller number of threads than 8.

triny,
I wish I could help you but I hate to speculate. Let me know if you have any specific questions about my set-up though and I'll be glad to answer.

Also, I run a 17mm spacer upfront, not 10mm.

It sounds to me like you could avoid any doubt and save yourself from possible grief by going with a 17x9 +35 rim with 265/40R17 tires. Your tire choices would be limited, however; probably Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar, Toyo Proxes T1R, or Kumho Ecsta MX tires.

spacers dont really bother me, specially if they are made right and fit snug.

besides, tracking the front out a little aint so bad.

The only real issue with spacers and longer wheel studs is running the stock wheels. You have to modify the OEM lugs to make them open ended. I wonder if this is what trinydex is worried about. I don't know where to find the OEM type lugs to accept a longer stud, I would love to keep mine, but I may sell them to make room and make my 17x9's the daily wheel/tire.

They do: http://www.enkei.co.jp/p_detail_nt03m_match.html

But they recommend 18x8.5+38 with 235's though....

It's a mystery to me why these are so impossible to find in the US. The same size fits rx7, rx8, supras and z33's etc.
