For winter tires on my EVO I've tried --Dunlop Winter Sport M2-- with much success. Gotta love AWD! Now thats what I call making angles in the snow.
For summer use (and abuse) I've heard that --Falken Azenis Sport-- offer decent grip and are inexpensive, but don't like rain much, are a bit noisy, and only provide 10k - 20k.
As for Tranny Fluid (where did that come from?), I recently changed to --Mobil 1 Synthetic-- with a little (6 FL. OZ.?) --Lucas Oil Stabilizer-- added for good measure. Shifting is noticibly smoother now, but still a little bit "notchy" when changing gears. No more missed shifts though...

Quick run-down on my tire experiences (w and w/o Evo):
For winter, I have Yoko AVS Winters on my stock wheels. I have never lived in a place that snows before, so you could say I'm a novice. Yet the Yokos were AWESOME - I was getting some outstanding traction in both fresh and packed snow. Dry grip was OK, but definitely not for driving at the limit.
As for summer tires, I now have Toyo T1-S in 245/40/18 and I really like them. They are a ton quieter than the Advan, but seem to have as much grip. Given that, if Yoko made A-046 (or A-048) in the same size (245/40/18), I would rather have those. A lot of people talk about the Bridgestone S-03. I had them on my S2K - they were much better in the rain than the S-02, but that's it. I liked the S-02 much better for traction. If you are staying 17", stick with the Advans. If you go to 18", get either the Toyos or Michelin PS2s. Very very nice (but a little pricey). Good luck!

You can't directly compare tire treadwear ratings between manufacturers. Each manufacturer assigns the ratings among their own tires after testing against a control tire. Take it as a very loose comparison.

Pirelli PZERO NERO M+S
PZERO NERO M+S I hear are excellent all season performance tires. The Tirerack guys say that they're very good tires for people who want a set of performance tires that will last a while. You probably give up 1-5% grip but I know I'm not a good enough driver to notice a difference like that.
