No, Dom, just the shocks are Bilstein on the MR's not the springs. All the springs on every model are the same.

I'll be measuring the spring rate on a set of '06 Evo MR springs in a few days. If someone wants to send me a set of GSR springs, I can measure those too.

They'll be the same. The reason people offer specific aftermarket springs for the MR is because they're trying to optimize the spring rate for the bilstein shock valving.

To add to the confusion, Works mentioned that the MR springs have a slightly different spring rate compared to the stock EVO springs. If what they are saying is true, my guess is, it might be a slightly lower rate than the regular EVO spring rates. Ofcourse they never mentioned what they measured the spring rate to be.

mrfed: Please post the rate after you measure it.

Will do. Again if anyone has a spare front and rear stock GSR/RS spring, I'd be happy to measure that too.

Finally got a chance to measure the stock Evo IX MR spring rates. The springs were tested on an Instron 20,000 lb servohydraulic test frame with a calibrated load cell. The front springs were compressed a total of 6 inches. The rears were compressed 5 inches. The rates were very consistent over the entire range of travel. Both the front and rear springs are linear rate springs (with a tiny bit of non-linearity at initial take up). The rates are:

front: ~200-205 lbs/in
rear: ~265-275 lbs/in

Interesting to compare with Swift Sport Mach springs. They claim a progressive spring rate:

front: 179->269 lbs/in (10% softer than stock progressing to 30% stiffer)
rear: 157->314 lbs/in (40% softer than stock progressing to 16% stiffer)

Anyone want to send me some springs to measure?

Huh... 11% over what the "common knowledge" had for the front. 20% over on the rear. Now I want to see what the IX and RS springs are.

According to the drilldown on mitsubishiparts.com, the IX and MR have the same front springs, but the ones on the RS are different. Here are the listings:

Coil spring, lancer, w/turbo, w/o abs 05-06 $69.00 $49.68

Coil spring, lancer, w/turbo, w/abs 05-06 $73.78 $53.12

Here's where it gets interesting: there are FOUR different rear springs listed. One for the IX, one for the RS, one for the MR, and one for the MR with "special suspension", whatever that is. Here are the listings:

Coil spring, lancer, w/o mr model, w/o abs - awd - AWD 05-06 $59.13 $42.65

Coil spring, lancer, w/o mr model, w/abs - awd - AWD 05-06 $65.38 $47.08

Coil spring, lancer, w/mr model, w/o special suspension - awd - AWD 05-06 $65.38 $47.08

Coil spring, lancer, w/mr model, w/special suspension - awd - AWD 05-06 $64.90 $46.73

And this is just for 05-06. The 03-04's may have different stuff.

To answer my own question, here's the listing for 03-04:

Front:

Coil spring, lancer, w/turbo, to 12/03 03-04 $73.78 $53.12

Coil spring, lancer, w/turbo, from 1/04, gsr model 2004 $73.78 $53.12

Coil spring, lancer, w/turbo, from 1/04, rs model 2004 $69.00 $49.68

Rear:

Coil spring, lancer - awd - AWD 03-04 $65.38 $47.08

Looks like anything up to 12/03 all had the same springs. I think these springs were continued on the rest of the VIII and IX GSR's and MR's. The rear on the 05-06's may be different between the GSR and MR, but I think they may have the same part number (same price at least). Starting in 1/04, the RS got its own springs and kept these through the rest of the VIII and IX production. There was apparently an optional suspension on the IX MR that changed the rear spring rates.

Good job Mrfred! Appreciate the info ... I was actually thinking the rates for the MR would be slightly lower given the softer Bilsteins ...
