255/40/17 on Stock Evo Wheel?
Have any of you all run a 255/40/17 on a stock evo rim (17" by 8.5")? It seems that this size is 3/10" smaller in diameter than a 235/45/17, but I am more concerned with clearance issues and possibly using a tire width that is too big for the stock rim width. Any comments are appreciated.

If you are just going for the phat **** tire look, have deep pockets, and don't mind imperfections or half-arsed jobs, the 255s fit on 17x8s just fine.
Edit- in response to boostwhore; there are a lot of things people do, that doesn't mean it is done well or correctly. Unfortunately, you are advising people that you have done something incorrectly, and that it is ok. It is not ok. At a minimum, you need a 8.5 for a 255mm tire for the tire to function as it was designed. what you are doing is providing mis-information over the internet.
When purchasing a tire, look to the manufacturers website for guidelines on what wheels specs are required for your tire.

No, actually, nukblazi has it all wrong. Go read the Tire FAQ that was posted. The 255/40-17 RT615s (don't get ST) fit wonderfully on the stock 17X8 rim, and they perform wonderfully, too. I don't know what you meant by fat pockets either - they cost half as much as 235/45-17 Advans and perform almost at an r-compound level. I have multiple fastest-lap-of-the-day times with my RT615s, and I even own a set of 245/45 V710s. I keep the RT615s on just to see how good they are and to save some wear on my race tires.
There are tons of us using the 255s on the stock rim with great success. For half the price, they are a far better value than Advans. Plus, there is no 235/45 RT615, so it's our best choice.

A 255 will not rub, but on the stock wheel, you are pinching in the sidewalls arching the contact patch. I've done it before, running a 245 on a 7.5 and 255 on a 17x8. In both situations the center of the tire wore out faster than the outsides. I lowered tire pressures by 1/2 a PSI until I got the contact patch as wide as possible before the tire arched the other way from being under inflated, ran it through water onto dry and meassured, it never panned out. (Tires used above were 245 S-03s & 235 and 255 Toyo RA1s).
Not arguing, just disagreeing for the reasons and experiences stated above, this doesn't mean I am necessarily correct either, but I believe I am.
Edit- in motorsports, different things work well other than that which conventionally works on the street e.g., a smaller tire on the rear for autocross to help rotate the car will = FTD.
Edit2- From the Tire FAQ;
"255 40 is your best bet. this tire is available from almost all tire manufacturers on every tire series that is made. this tire size is best run on a 8.5-9" wide wheel with a +35 offset. that said it will fit a 8-9.5" wide wheels i don't know about 10", even tho it's theoretically possible by the time people go to 10" wide wheels they're not ****in' around with lowering springs and fender clearence.
