How much play is normal in brake pedal with stock brakes and lines?

Is it rock hard when at idle or is there a little play before it firms up? I can't remember how it was when I first got the car.

Thanks.

Thanks. I have a lot more than a several mm. I checked the to see if the shims were curved at all behind the pads, but they were fine. I've bled the brakes 4 times, but the pedal stays sort of mushy. I used the motive bleeder, so the resevoir never ran dry. Is there anything else I can check?
