Stretched Tires

Anybody have experience fitting a smaller profile tire on a wheel made for a larger tire? I'm looking into doing something like this when my current stock tires expire. Mainly want to run the supension lower and also love the look of part of the tire hiding in the fender well.

Post up stretched tires on evos if anybody's got them!

Search stretched tires on google. There is a decent article on VWvortex.com about it. I personally wouldnt do this to an Evo unless maybe it was a showcar and I liked that look.

As it is when you push the Evo hard it will roll the front tires over and eat the sides fo them. Of course, I'm assuming you wouldnt take it road racing after doing this.

The article states that they started doing this in finland or something to get by with a law that stated that the tread couldnt exceed the fenderwell. I dont know how true that is because the hot rodders of yester-year were doing this long ago and stretching motorcycle tires for skinnys.

Okay you're explanation contradicsts what I've read. Including what what was stated on VW Vortex. For starters, drifters take there car sideways ALL the time and a majority exclusively use stretched tires for this. If the sidewall beaded any or slid, don't you think this technique wouldn't be used? As a matter of fact, the sidewalls wouldn't flex nearly at all since the loaded force on the tires are near parallel to the angle the sidewalls meaning the force acting on the sidewall is longitudinal. This might create a greater shear force, but as long as you use a tire that is recommended which is usually a tire that is more flexible in the sidewall which is necessary to lessen the chance of beading, one would be fine running a stretched tire. Thanks for the info though .

yea, I see the logic there.. nowhere to roll cause the sidewall is not really the sidewall anymore. My understanding is that you dont stretch for additional grip though, one of the side effects is less grip. Where I live I wouldnt even want to lower my car an inch or give up any sidewall because the roads are crap. Did the F&F 3 Evo have stretched tires?

Yes, and it also had a VTEC switch mounted on the center console so you could kick your VTEC on if you need to catch up to the car in front of you or get away from the bad guys. Plus it had a special adjustable suspension setting for when you drop your tires into the rain gutter to corner harder. Makes the car handle MUCH better in those extreme circumstances. . .

what size tire are you hoping to run on what size rim? it's common to see people run 235 on a 10" rim or 215 on a 9" rim. but it's pretty uncommon to see those sizes on an evo so i doubt you'll have much luck finding too many pics from people on this site. 2 users come to mind though.

ZK used some enkie rpf1's 18x9.5+15 w/235 tire

and here's driftunit's car with te37's 18x9.5+12 w/235 tire

good luck. send me some pics if you go through with it.

You will never get the front low enough for the tire to be up inside the fender without the rear being rediculously low. You can fit a 285 width tire on a 10" rim all around without too much trouble, and you can get it to tuck completly up in the rear fender. Why put a skinny tire on and downplay the handling of your car when you can fit a properly sized tire and make that thing a monster in the corners? Not knocking your decision, just trying to understand it.

I thought the reason people did the stretching thing (other than for drifting) was to fit a wide wheel with cool offset, even if they couldn't fit the apropriate tire.
