The point of foam is to act to help help connect points. We can add some sheet metal in a few spots and then use the foam as a light way to add stiffness and rigidity by limiting directional change.

In short as DTM points out, it does work and science and common sense agree that it should.

Did folks actually follow the link I posted? That is maybe the coolest car I have seen in ages and is high art in my book. At some point I am going to rip my whole car apart and do something similar to this. As DTM sees the vision I may just have to twist his arm into helping me do it.

if you want the ultimate in strength then you need to be looking at seem welding the chassis and having a proper weld in cage made for the car. if you build the cage so it extends to the front shock towers, through the dash and braces the towers diagonaly then you will have a very stiff front end.

Chris.
Actually that "trick" is a fix, not a band aid. It works extremely well in areas that have low tensile strength.

Seam welding can go both ways. The problem is that Most "tuners" do not do it correct. Or in the proper spots. They just Go around mig welding the panels ends thinking that it will make the car more rigid with less flex. Completely untrue.
The proper roll cage will depend on the type of racing the car will be involved in as well. But you are right, if done correctly all three of these items will increase chassis strength and stability.

I want to use this on the support structure of my CF trunk lid, because right now the trunk lid flexes too much when the wing is under load at high speeds. Thanks!
Thats a good question, I remember that 30 tubes had to be used to fill all the frame rails, pillars and rear trunk area. That made the biggest difference. Let me find the exact product name and get back to you. Its made by 3M

I'm getting with you tonight after I finish up this engine. I had a few minutes to spare here.... Give me call to discuss.
