SSR Comp-H in 17x8.5 - why won't these fit?

I found these SSR Comp-H wheels on sale on Tirerack's site when searching for wheels for a 2003 Mustang Cobra. They are normally around $400 each, but are on closeout for only $179 each since SSR went out of business. Sure seems like a pretty damn good deal considering they weigh only 15.9lbs each.

I'm wondering why these aren't listed under the Lancer Evolution application on Tirerack's site? They are 17x8.5 with a 5-114 bolt pattern and 31mm offset. The specs are all inline with other aftermarket 17x8.5 wheels for the Evo, so why won't they fit? Does it have to do with the shape of the spoke not clearing the front Brembos calipers on the Evo? That's the only thing I can think of...

Here's the link:

SSR Comp-H Silver w/Machined Lip (listed for the 03 Cobra)

Now compare those specs to the Gram Lights 57S which are listed for the Evo. The bolt pattern is identical and the offset is only off by 1mm. So why do the SSR Comps not fit and the Gram Lights do?

Gram Lights 57S Bronze (listed for the 05 Evo)

Thanks for any help.

Mike

Both of the links are the same, I dont really think theres a reason that they wouldnt fit. But I would buy those wheels in a heartbeat for my car. If they came in gunmetal, now to look for them in gunmetal.

tech says the molds they make both wheels in are different. because of that the spoke profile differs from one to the other. will hit the brakes. sorry guys

i deal with the tire rack on a daily basis. you do have to be tricky on the phone with them at times. i really can't remember his ext. but "sam" is who i deal with mostly. sometimes you have to have an imagination when you call and hope the guy on the other end has one as well!

btw, this is not a shot at the tire rack. like i said i deal with them daily and i enjoy doing business with them.

meaning...if it doesn't pop up on their little screen of fitments they automatically say it wont fit. that could mean anything from the "center bore" being too big or the "offset" not being exactly right. i just ordered the moda r6's from the tire rack and quess what....they said they didn't make them for the evo. but with alittle wheel experience and talking to the right person i got them any way. btw, i ran the moda's on my srt4 before i sold it and it was the same story.....they don't make them for the srt4!

I have those. They require small small spacers. At that price they are an absolute steal.

Yes, they don't fit.

Adrian called me today, and UPS had just dropped off the wheels (talk about fast service!). He confirmed with their diagrams and there is spoke to caliper intereference.

Since I also ordered some extra hardware for some previously purchased wheels from TireRack, I opened one of the packages up and took a look at the actual rim. The hub to spoke transition is too thick and gradually curved. No way they're gonna fit w/out spacers. Their guess is 10 mm spacers.

So kudos to Adrian and the Tirerack team for getting the stuff out to me so quickly. We knew it was a gamble, but for that price, it was definitely worth the shot. (I've purchased wheels from them before that they claimed wouldn't fit, but of course the did.)

Are you going to return the wheels or try and use spacers?
