Not a good idea to rely on a 17X8 rim to put down 500whp (400ish wtq?), but if you absolutely must, then get some 255-width drag radials. BFGs maybe? You're still going to spin some...

Gonna be tuff to find 255 width drag radials, the BFG tires come in 225 or 275. You should be able to get pretty good launches with the 225's as long as you warm them up a little.

Dont scrimp. Severe loss of traction and a meeting with the wall isnt worth it. While that might be the worst case scenario, having a car capable of running 10's that runs 12's because you cheaped out in the second most important part of the build is just embarassing. Get something inexpensive like a set of FN10RC's like everyone else does in a 17x9 or 17x9.5 and throw some 275's on for the track. If its not lowered excessively you wont be faced with rubbing going in a straight line.

Your other alternative is to buy a tire thats not designed for drag racing thats still sticky (such as an RA1, RT615, etc.) in a 255-40-17 for your 17x8 and air it down and hope it works.

And for further reference, I have 255-width RT-615s on my stock rims and still spin all 4 sometimes with only 300whp/330wtq. You will rip them all the way through 2nd.
