So if I want aftermarket lug nuts I need after market rims?

Because aftermarket lugs aren't compatible with our stock wheels. Aftermarket wheels/lugs are usually chamfered (angled where they seat against the wheel), a la:
While the stock Evo lug nuts are shanked (flat seat against the wheel), like this:
ignore the fact that the diagrams are illustrating fitment problems

Those are for aftermarket wheels only, they are angled, just like every other "tooner" lugnut available.
