YES... is it common for the light to come on when your pads are about done. The reason is that the pistons on the caliper must push in more to get the pad to touch the rotor. as a result the resivour goes down in level and the light turns on. You can make the light go away by adding more fluid, but that won't change the fact that soon your pads will be toast.

Visual inspection takes like 3 seconds for all 4 corners on the Evo and its super easy to tell and change them. But the grinding (not squealing like typical brakes) noise will also give it away.

No sensors other than the fluid level check. There are however indicators on the stock pads, which are just metal strips oriented perpendicularly to the rotor face so that when the pads get low enough they will begin to touch and scrape the rotor resulting in a very annoying screach/squeal. Some aftermarket pads will come with these indicators as well but many do not.

wow. a lot of bad advice.
1. Your dashboard brake light comes on when the brake fluid sensor senses that your fluid is low.
2. If you're fluid is low, it means that your brakes are low (or you have a leak). As your brake pads decrease in thickness, fluid sits lower in the reservoir because the pistons in your caliper sit closer to the rotor. This effectively lowers your brake fluid level by increasing the resting fluid volume in your braking system.
3. YES. If your brake light goes on in your dashboard, it means you have low fluid and thus significant pad wear.
4. Many pads incorporate sort of a last ditch safety measure for pads and will introduce something that will actually make the pads squeal to notify you that the pad is on its way out.
