That's a great question.......but even further probing.....how many of you would go down to 16's for winter tires?

Don't know if 16's will clear the calipers. Important thing to consider.

Personally, I want some Blizzak LM's on some inexpensive alloy wheels. I'm sure as winter gets closer to rolling around, we'll try to put together a group buy for these. There's a number of tire rack type people on here who I'm sure would love to help.

Everyone says Blizzaks are the best winter tire to have, although they only last about 20k miles...

Now how are 15" rims, steel or otherwise, going to fit over the Brembo's?

i doubt 15's and 16's would fit on an Evo with the size of those calipers... i'm going to throw some Michelin Artic Alpines on the stock wheels... they pull through just about anything... good wet, dry, slush, and snow... very very good tires... was going to try blizzaks since i'm sure they're good too, but, i figure i'm just gonna stick with the alpines since i had such a good experience with them before...

arent the Blizzaks best for snow? Im not worried about rain and things as I am snow and ice... plus 20k miles will be enough for 3-4 months for a few years...

But i'll put them on the stockers and buy better 17" wheels for spring and put the advans on those

just look up nokian's website...
actually I think I did the same to find a dealer in NH area.

I personally ice race in these on my celica All-trac, my dedicated rally car...they are awesome on snow, ice, dirt...whatever.
They will last long than the blizzak too, and still maintain the performance.

15" wheels will not fit, nor 16" wheels...

From Nokian's web site,

P235/45ZR17 93 W Sorry, no tire currently available

On the other hand they have a 225/45R17 91T in the Hakkapeliitta 2 which is approved for 8" rims. The load index is technically lower than the stock tire by 77 lbs.

Does the lower load index matter?

I bought a set of 215/45/17 Michlein Artic Alpin's for my SVT Focus back in March and obviously weren't on the car that long, but in Maine, we still got a lot of snow in March and April. I was really impressed with the Alpins, the reason why I went with those instead of a strictly heavy duty snow/ice tire is, let's face it, the roads at least in the far North East get cleared off pretty damn fast these days and I still wanted to retain decent performance while driving on cold cleared roads and not lose control when snow was on the road and the Alpins did that flawlessly. At the time I lived on a 160 acre farm in the middle of nowhere, and I was able to get through all the snow covered dirt and paved back roads without any problems. I would suggest a "performance" winter tire to anyone that does a lot of highway travelling and doesn't want a huge penalty that typical "snow" tires provide during the cold months. Michelin's website says the 215/45/17 will fit on an 8" rim, so I'm gonna go with these first, if they cause a problem, i'll just fork out the money for a new set in the proper size.
