factory tires last only 12k miles??????

dude i think i went about 6 months or so maybe a lil longer and then i definetly needed new tires, those things wear out with the quickness. now i been ridding on kumho ecstas asx for a while and have had no problems what so ever with wear and it cost about $300 dollars less then the advans.

Agreed, the stock tires are in the upper echelon of tires and definitely one of the best tires to come on a car from the factory. Tires are a wear item like brakes and clutches. The owners manual even states that the tires will wear faster because of the softer compound used.
The more agressively you use them, the faster they will wear. The combination of the soft compound and stiff side wall give the car excellent road holding capability. You can find tires that are cheaper, last longer, and ride better but few are going to match the handling capabilty in both wet and dry conditions like the Advans.
If you're only interested in going fast in straight line then there are tons of choices out there that will be cheaper. If you're willing to sacrifice grip for longevity there are tons of tires better than the stock ones at doing that.

+1 on this. I couldn't agree more. The stock tire is the best performance tire you can buy for a 17 in rim. Excluding R-compound tires. Remember this u get what you pay for. I got a set of Falkins RT-615. To me they were garbage. I also took them back to get a better tire. In stead I killed them in 3 months and was happy to replace them with Hankook W300 winter tires which performed much better. LOL
If I were you I'd try to get some used tires on the forums, then Dunlop Z1, BFG-KD, RE-01, finally the Advan AD-07. Any thing else besides R compound you going to lose a lot of performance.

I killed the original (amazing) Advans in about 13 or 14k, replaced with Yoko AVS-ES100, which were okay but only lasted about another 15. I had to replace them quickly and the only thing my tire place had in stock was Goodyear F1-GS D3s. I wasn't too happy (Goodyear wasn't exactly top of my list) and they were pricy, but they gripped like mad in the dry, did well in the wet and lasted about 25k. I was very impressed. But apparently I'm hard on tires...
I replaced the F1s with BFG KDWS (primarily for rallycross, which the F1s sucked at
) - they rock in the dirt, but turned out to be surprisingly good in the dry as well. I guess they have really stiff sidewalls. Today I got some Dunlop DZ101 (I think.. Direzzas of some kind, not expensive enough to be Z1) in 255/40/17 and put them on a spare set of Rotas I had. It'll be interesting to see how they do (and how long they last). At least this way my rallycross rubber isn't getting worn down on the street.
