Those Running 255/40/17 on stock rims

Seems like the handling is way off.......I have the Kumho Ecsta ASX....and it seems when cornering, fast lane changing, whatever, the back seems to want to kick out like heavy understeer...almost feels like the tire is rolling over the sidewalls somehow......wondering anyone runnin this, what psi you are running in all your tires...

No problems here, 35psi in the front 32psi in the rear.

Well, first of all, it has nothing to do with running 255/40s on stock rims. It's that fact that you're running crappy all seasons that is causing very poor handling.

Secondly, understeer is when the rear does NOT rotate, and you just keep going straight despite turning the wheel. The rear kicking out is oversteer.

technically they are rated as ultra high performance from tire rack, but i'm sure your intelligance supersedes there posted rating.....yes i may have mixed up over and under steer definitions......but anyway, on your setup, what type of pressure are you running and what do you recommend i do to lesson that feeling, rear sway perhaps?....or is it just my crappy tires causing this hands down.

The name is not a rating - the treadwear is the real rating. Everything they say in words is RELATIVE to the class of tire. That may be ultra high for an all season, but that means it still sucks ***** compared to a real summer tire. All seasons are no seasons. They cannot handle or perform - period.

Tire pressure and sway bars are not the problem. A rear sway upgrade would cause MORE oversteer.

Try turning in slower, and be smooth - Remember slow in - fast out. This is especially true in the evo where there is such a front bias. You should be able to go pretty freakin fast with your stock suspension and some modified driving habits...

Actually, no, the answer is to get tires that belong on the Evo so that it can perform how it was designed. Ever try sprinting in dress shoes?

What it actually seems like, is you're running too wide a "soft sidewall" tire.
The only success I hear of with 255's on stock rims are Falken RT-615's, due to their very stiff sidewall.

The evo WAS meant to be driven on those nice expensive Advan's, so stepping down to budget all-seasons is like kicking that nice Japanese engineer in the crotch.

Its the tires.

I drove my 03 in the winter and there was a night and day difference between all seasons and advans.

If you think about it.... all the performance of your car is put to the ground on four little contact patches about the size of a shoe print. Everything goes through the cars shoes. The single one place you cannot cheap out on is tires.

Nothing but an R compound can touch the ADVANS. I've been there and tried darn near everything from wider to shorter and nothing can touch but advan.

I agree with his ball sucking all season tire comment.
