For those that have shipped wheels and tires..

Roughly how much does it cost to ship wheels and tires together? The tires will obviously be mounted on the rims. I'm looking to ship all 4.

I have paid as much as $300-400 to ship wheels and tires before. Of course I made the mistake of going to a shipping store, buying the boxes and packing, plus shipping. My advice to you would be to find your own boxes. You can go to the back of a wal mart or even a liquor store and they will give you boxes. Next I would try to find a local Fedex shipping headquarters nearest to where you live. It will save you tons of money. If you find your own boxes and find a Fedex dock, shipping should be on average about $125.00.

On average, 18" wheels with tires weigh about 48 pounds. Plus dimensions come in mind. It would help as well if you found 2 Big TV boxes that will fit 2 wheels at a time. Just make sure it has extra packing/newspsper so they don't get scratched up.

It's only about $100... ask me how I know.

Ground service level
Dimensions = 24"x8"x24"
Weight = 50lbs

Distance example - 30005 to San Antonio TX... only $22.00 ea. (4 individual shipments)

Ship like below...

I had 4 wheels with tires mounted shipped from CA to IL and it was about $170. It all depends how far they go.

Boxing should not be necessary. Do what Tire Rack does: Put cardboard discs over the wheel parts, not the tires, and ship them in pairs, face to face, taped to each other. The tires are plenty able to withstand the shipping abuse and the wheels are protected by the cardboard and tires.

$240 to ground ship 4 stock IX rims/tires from DE to FL...UPS guys said because they calculate the dimensions of the shipping container instead of only going by weight, items tended to be more expensive to ship.

Not sure if that's true as I haven't shipped anything smaller but of equal weight.

Try fed ex as they always cheaper to ship larger/heavier items than UPS and if you have a DHL local to you I would highly recommend using them as they are alot cheaper and will be delivered quicker than UPS or FedEx.
BTW,if you remove all the air in the tires and fill with Helium it will reduce shipping weight J/K..

DHL was the cheapest for me and I could ship 4 17" wheels and tires anywhere in the continental US for less than $100.

That's correct, shipping companies take the higher of actual or dimensional weight.

Multiply L x W x H (in inches) and divide by 194 to calculate dimensional weight.

That's the way to do it - only thing I would recommend would be to put a cloth in between the cardboard to prevent it from shifting and possibly scuffing the face during transit.

But this way is much better than using a box.
