Recomendations for Track tires on 17X9 wheels?

Please excuse my ignorance in this department. I have been spending most of my time building power. Now it is time for suspension and tires. I have aquired a set of 17x9 5zigens that I wil use for dedicated track day tires. After doing a little reading it sounds like shaved RA1's maybe the best choice. Any opinions on sizes. I am not afraid of rolling the fenders or trimming things a bit. I just want the most meat available and the fastest possible tire that will last more than 4 track days. There will be no street driving involved. Stock brakes and coilovers are yet to be determined, but the pure tuning coilovers seem to be getting good reviews and you can't beat the price.

275/40/17 or 255/40/17 sizes.

Tires- Toyo RA1, Nitto NTO1 each last a long time and have predictable breakaway and slip angles. The BFG R1 isn't a bad track day tire... but pricey. The Hoosier R6 is also fun for more grip, but if you're not racing... I'd skip and go with the less expensive RA-1.

You could also look for a set of Kumho V700s/Victoracers on clearance.

would you people get off the RA-1 already? lol. its a dated tire that has basically been replaced. go with the NT-01 or R888 for road courses if you dont want a full-on "slick" R-comp, simple as that.

255/40/17 Toyo RA1 or Nitto NT01 would be your best bet imo. Those are the tried and true favorites. You won't need any fender work with either of them on your 5zigens - I run the same.

You could go with a 275/40 if you want, but you'll lose a bit of steering response from the taller tire and it won't be as precise as it's pretty wide for a 9" rim. That's my .02 on it.

Also available are some 245 Hankook's Z214's I think.

Why don't you calm down, tough guy. The guy made an innocent mistake. You sound like you suffer from SDS.

Didn't your mother teach you any manners?

I can almost swear there wasn't one that would fit 17x9 for R888 at least up to few months ago, because I was shopping for it and the size wasn't listed.

Its funny how some people get so worked up when other people make comments on their post. Those people usually die quite early from heart attacks.

I just bought same sized track wheels, and went to Mueller for tire recommendations. He suggested RA-1's in 255/40, so that's what I'm rolling with.
Everybody has different likes and dislikes, and you gotta start somewhere, so I'm starting with the Toyo's

If you want the 'most meat and the fastest possible' then definately go for slicks rather than r-compounds, since it sounds like you use trailer to take the evo to tracks. Hoosier has nice range of hard to soft tires for all sorts of racing. If it is road racing only, try Advan A005, it doesn't last long but warms up quick has unbelievable grip. Definately look for 275+ width if you dont mind fender rolling/shaving.

Most veteran racers will tell you to start out on street tires. After a season or two on street grips then move to race rubber.

Race tires especially in that size will have you playing connect the dots and not really learning anything.

I haven't been on a track in over a year and a half, but I used to run the 255/40 RA-1. They are ridiculously sticky and have almost predictable break-away characteristics.

But if you don't know how to drive on race tires, it can get ugly because you are going much faster and have much less notice when they let go.

yeah go and get familiar with driving a set of street tires first before jumping on race tires.

But if you have already put some track times under your belt, another you can consider is the semi-r compound RE-01Rs

While this is great advice. I have been racing karts since I was 6 years old. Karts are the ultimate training for drving skills. I also have a track miata and 5 years experience behind the wheel of the evo with several track days on Advans. Every car however is different and I was just looking to see what others R compnds or slicks that people have had success with on track. I love the RA1's on my miata and I guess I am leaning that way for the evo. Would anyone say that the R888 outperforms the RA1? I would love to just go to slicks but how long would they last? A couple of events? A season? This is an honest question. I don't know? Let me also add that I don't mind fender rolling at all. Bump for more responses. Thanks to all those that have contributed
