18's: 255/35 or 245/40?

Having a real hard time deciding what tires to get for my new wheels...18's with +30 offset, 9 inches wide.

I live in Michigan and some roads are full of potholes, so I don't know how smart getting a 35 series tire would be. I have never ridden in a car with a 35 series tire; so I have no idea how the ride conditions would be, but I'm assuming it would be much more bumpier and rough compared to a 40 series.

I had a 40 series on my last car and they looked and worked great, but on the Evo I'd like to go as wide as possible without rubbing...and I've narrowed it down to the 245/40 or 255/35. I'd really like to have the 255 width but don't know if I would be making a bad decision using a 35 as opposed to a 40, and I'm pretty sure a 255/40 won't fit.

Anyone out there that has ran one or both of these combos that could give me a little insight so I can finally get these wheels mounted? Thanks a bunch.

Well remember the 35 or 40 thickness is a function of width. So a 40 series on a narrow tire can be thinner than a 35 on a wider tire. I personally would run the 255/35s. They are still pretty thick so potholes and such shouldnt be too bad. Only thing is you might have to do some rear fender modification with that +30 offset. But I think it is worth it. If not, then I suggest some 245/40/18 Falken RT-615s. I have those tires now on my stock rims (in 245/45/17) and for the money they are great.

I am running 245/40R18 on 18x9 +39 currently but regret not getting 265/35R18.

Overall diameter between the two is similar 25.7" OD for the 245 VS. 25.3" OD for the 265 (Potenza RE-01R) Stock Advan A046 Overall Diameter is 25.3".

I don't know if you would have to roll the rear quarters for the 265's though.

You'll have more sidewall height out of the 245's. Diam of the 255's are 25.0 overall dia with 3.5" of sidewall, 245's are 25.7" in diam with 3.8" of sidewall. Just check the clearance before you drive on them.

Why not 265/35R18? They're closer to the stock diameter (25.3 vs 25.4).

I don't think a 265 would fit without some major work...remember I'm running a +30 offset...so it's a little different than the stockers, plus one more inch in wheel diameter.

Still very frustrated on picking a tire! I'd like to go as wide as possible without doing major surgery on my rear fenders...a little rolling might be ok, but no pulling, bumping, etc.

Any other thoughts on this subject?

I have the 245/40 series tire on a 18x9 +30mm rim, and I would recommend it over the 255/35 series. They are cheaper and they match the OEM overall diameter closer.

But if someday you want to go really wide with the tire tread (with fender modifications) 265/35 is the way to go.

See fittment below...

it would be great to see some photos showing all three sizes in this thread so we can compare. The pic of the 245s on the red evo is nice. Can someone post some similar pics of some 255s and 265s? I have been considering 255s but hadn't thought about 265s. I'd like to go wide if I can, but my wheels are 18x8.5 so they may not be wide enough for 265s.

I know that 265's will definitely require fender modifications, and I'd really like to stay away from that.

245's are looking better and better to me...combined with the 40 dollars less per tire over the 255/35 and not having to worry about dodging potholes constantly, it looks like the logical choice!

Thank you red rs for posting a picture!

BTW: Do you like the 615's? How is the treadwear supposed to be?

Just and FYI... if you want a 265/35 tire, you have to go to at least a 9" wheel.

255/40 is the largest you can go on a 8.5 rim

Just got my second set of Azenis. I love them. My stock advans lasted 8,000miles, and my first set of Azenis lasted 14,000 miles (with a little track time)

That's what I figured. I might get some new wheels along with it, but wanted to see if it was a requirement if I looked at going to a 265. Thanks for the input.

I'm guessing I'll end up with a 255. I'd still like to see some photo comparisons in this thread.
