I am solely tracking my Evo 8. To get some more grip I don't mind if the wheels protrude the body of the fenders I just don't want rubbing. From what evo owners have told me that closest to +18 offset will be kinda mandatory.

I cant find an offset less than 35 for a lightweight 17x9.5 so please chime in

17x9.5 FTW... Just make sure you get wide tires too. Stretching sidewalls are a waste of wide wheels in my opinion.

-you made no mention of what tires you want to run! that is an important factor!
-the "+18" offset thing can be accomplished by using spacers on a higher offset wheel

statements like this are very common but not always appropriate. while not necessarily incorrect, there are times when "stretching" tires is desireable and just fine or even necessary.

I personally run 245/40/17 on 9.5" wheels. +38 offset with a 20mm spacer in front.

Before anyone gets all uppity and overly opinionated about 245s on a 9.5" wheel, you should know
- i race in STU, and 245 is a the max tires size.
"well you should have gotten a narrower wheel then. blah blah"
yes if I were trying to drag race. i am not, and i want to get the most tread width out of the 245s, and a 9.5 allows this perfectly within reason.
- It reduces the overall diameter.
-When I use 255s or even 275s, it is wide enough to get good use out of those sizes as well.
- It looks awesome but that's just a side-benefit to everything else.
- For the Recerd, AFAIK richard Jung also uses this exact setup and WINS on it. Consistently. Nationally.

 

I may be confused, and so someone please school me on this. How does a 245 tire provide more traction when stretched on a wider wheel. Aren't you just stretching the sidewalls, and no neccesarily the contact patch. Also, I dont race so I dont know the tire sizing rules, but so many ppl have recommended running the 255 on the narrower stock wheels! I'm so confused!

 

I didn't say it increases traction, but it can.
255's on an 8" will work and match the stock diamater, but you should not use this as a basis of comparison for what is "right". I do use that setup on the street, but then switch to the 245/40/17 for AutoX, which is counterintuitive what many people would think, but it works.
It's not a big difference, but a wider wheel squeezes the last bit of tread WIDTH out of the tire, i.e. the part that otherwise would not be in contact with the ground on a too-narrow wheel.
It's also a matter of handling. I won't go into all the specifics of how it affects handling right now, but for now it improves it for what I like.

 

Depends mainly on the 'tracking' you are doing and the amount of whp you are putting out. Answer those 2 questions first...

 

I believe the Enkei RPF1 is available in 17x9.5 and 17x10 lowest offset is +15 IIRC.

And they are light :-)

I also second the STU thoughts: I used to run STX including the 2005 Nationals and got out gunned using 215/45/17 on 17x7.5 SSR's by the rest of the field on 245-40 or 245-45. I believe a little stretch helps eke out the very last bit, and stabilizes the sidewall . Downside is that you have to have the suspension setup just right, or the car will slide more suddenly. Tire pressure is also critical.

I go to Streets of Willow Springs Raceway, a tight a safe track. I am on the stock block so less than 400HP.

 

I say go 9.5 width- wider is better
I run 255/35/18 on my 18x9.5 RPF1's with 20mm front spacers- aside from looking sick it handles great

 

Just buy my 17x9.5 ADVAN RS wheels already the silver RS wheels will look fabulous on your black EVO
