Tire review S-Drive and Proxes T1R
This is a 2 tire review. I replaced the OEM wheels/tires after 12k miles with Rota 18's and Toyo Proxes T1R tires in the 245/40-18 size.
The Toyos were a big let down especially for the price (I paid almost 180 a tire). The pros - excellent rain performance and hydroplaning resistance. Also very quiet when new. The bad - the sidewalls are super soft. Makes for mushy handling. I experimented with tire pressures and ended up with 42 psi front and 40 rear to compensate for the soft sidewalls. However, the tires still lacked dry grip at the limit. These tires howl when pushed. Even with an aggressive suspension setup with an aggressive alignment, these tires still howled.
Fast forward 20k miles, the Toyos are nearing the wear bars and the inner shoulders are gone from my aggressive camber. The Toyos are now super loud as well. I replaced them with similar sized Yokohama S-Drive tires. Wow. What a difference. The Yokos are quiet (like the Toyos when new). The Yokos grip too. No more howling. They have decent handling response with much better sidewall construction. No more ridiculously high tire pressures (I am at 35 front and 33 rear now). The ride is more compliant as well since the tire pressures aren't so high. So far I am loving them. No rain experience yet but I will report on that later. I paid 676 shipped from Tirerack for a set of 4 tires.
Are the S-Drives a good Auto-x tire? Probably not. Are they a good street tire that has reasonable durability? Absolutely. Feel free to post up any other experiences with these 2 tires.

Hmmmm. Trying a set of Toyo T1R I got on a set of wheels at Autocross yesterday and they kept sliding, especially if they hit a small patch of gravel. I put 34 PSI in the rear and 36 front (cold).
Hmmmm...
