255/40/17 S.Drive on IX BBS

So after debating for a long time amongst Star Spec, RT-615, S.Drive, etc, I decided to finally go with the S.drive. My car is mainly a commuter car and I just don't want to spend money on tires in another 10,000 miles. Who's got the money for that nowadays?

Fitment
I searched around and couldn't find anybody that went with 255 S.drive's on the stock BBS, but I decided to go with it anyways. After fitting the tires on and taking some hairpin turns, there was no rubbing at all; however, I'm on stock Bilstein suspension. The sidewalls are a little bulged out (as you can tell in the picture), and most likely I need to put more air in it to make the tires stand taller (it's currently 34 psi all around).

You can also see in this picture a comparison of how much wider the 255 S.drive is compared to the 235 Blizzak LM-22. Pretty significant difference.

Initial Impression
They are so civilized! It's quiet and soft on bumps which is a good change from the stock Advans, Blizzak LM-22, and the Sumitomo HRTZ II. The turn in feedback really isn't very impressive and that's probably because the sidewalls are a little bulged and they're designed on the soft side. They grip like high performance all-season tires would and is predictable around turns. It's safe to say I won't be upset driving them around town because they meet my expectations.

Bonus Pics

My blown out Sumitomo's

Oh 1 more thing. I got these tires from this place called Tire Central located in San Gabriel, California. If you live within driving distance from them, I would definitely recommend you going there. Their price is just unbelievably inexpensive. At first I was kinda doubting if this whole thing was legit so I watched them do the work. After literally 15 minutes later, I drove out of there with my new S. drives and paid exactly what they quoted over the phone. You can find them on cragislist the easiest. Call to speak with Donald.

That's it for now; maybe I'll update on these tires later...just maybe

Hey Gus!

S-drives? They don't look to shabby!

Its nice that you put up a picture of how a 255/40/17 looks on a stock rim as a lot of people ask that question.

I just picked up a set of 245/40/17 RE01R's on clearance @ Tirerack. I'll have to follow up with those!

Yo Jeff, what are you doing up at this hour!

I almost went with that deal too (or the $50 rebate on the Star Spec), but my car is no where near as setup as yours...actually my car is not setup at all; just a nut behind the wheel in an A-stock car

I still have the Blizzak saved for the rallyx out here

Let me know how those RE01R's work out.

so what size tire should i go with on a stock bbs wheel? I've been told from people either stay stock size 235 or go 245 or go 255. I would love to go with the biggest (255) size but are there any side effects to going with a bigger tire than stock?

He mentions a few in his post - soft sidewall = less responsive turn in, softer over bumps, (sidewall here too), and it will effect the speedo some.

sorry i feel like an idiot but just reconfirm... so if i go with stock tire size and lets say the star specs, it will be a stiffer sidewall than a 245 or 255 tire. I'm looking for something with a very stiff sidewall compared to the factory advan tires so maybe I'll settle between stiff sidewall and larger tire by going with 245s.

Its really the 255s being wider than the rim. Using the Z1* as the example - they tend to run wider than advertised. So a 255 will be very wide on the rim, causing some budging over the sides. That means more sidewall flex - slower turn in but more footprint (wider tire).

Correct, a compromise between wider and stiffness would be a 245. Either a 245/45 or 245/40. I prefer the 245/45 for the extra height it gives me in AXing.

cool thanks for answering my noobish questions man! I think I will go with the star specs in 245/45/17. I fell in love with the stiff sidewalls on the advans and can't wait to return to summer tires soon.

Just an update.

I bumped the pressure up on these tires to 38f/36r to make the tires taller, but while backing out of the driveway I heard a little rubbing noise. I think the tire inside edge is scrubbing against either the fender plastic or something similar. This only happens at full lock.

These tires can take 51psi max, so maybe I'll load the pressures up to 40f/38r next. I doubt that's really going to make a big difference but I'll give it a try.

they're on my photobucket if you right click>properties, you will find the route.

After putting close to 1000 miles on these, I still like 'em. Like I said though, they're definitely not as sticky as you want them on the high G freeway interchange/on ramp.
