Advan A032R vs. Nitto NT-05

ok before i get flamed, i realize that these are in two different classes. however, i have narrowed my tire choice down to these two tires. size is going to be 255/40/17 on the stock IX enkei's.

purpose:

auto-x ONLY...no street driven. i will arrive at the event, slap them on, race, and take them off when i'm done...

question:

which is better in terms of grip? what about treadwear and how many events would each generally last?

thanks!

fwiw; a 17x9 rim would work better.

That being said, there's really not much data on the NT05 yet. Def not any data on how long it'll last.

Not many ppl I know are running the advans for autox because of price. If these are dedicated track tires, you should think of a dot approved slick. And have you thought of the Dunlops? They have have many good reviews for autox, and bang for buck purposes. The last autox I was at, 8 out of ten cars had the Star Specs on!

Not a bad tire. Able to be driven back/forth to the track which is nice. The newer A048 is an even better tire, but you may want to have them shaved a bit if you tend to heat them up. Full tread for a decent wet back-up.

I'm not sure why all these people are telling you to go r-comp without asking what class you plan on competing in? (I mean other than you asked about some unproven for autox tire).

If you're in STU, the "tire to have" is still up in the air. The RE-11 and Dunlop Star Spec seem to be the tire of choice, possibly with the new Yoko (if they ever get released).

The NT-05 looks grippy enough, but I think it's non-cheaterness in width will be a disadvantage. I'm going to autocross on my NT-05's this weekend to see how they do.

If you're going to be in any other class, then you're going to want either Hoosier A6's or Kumho V710s. That's your choices. The A6 will have superior grip when new and fall off when they get older. The v710's will have less grip initially but they will last longer. The v710's can be used at the road course as well.

thanks for all the input guys...

i'll be running in BSP so tire compound doesn't really matter

i was really looking into slicks but i can get the a032r for a ridiculously dirt cheap price so i'll hold off on full blown slicks for the moment. this'll be my third auto-x event but i absolutely slaughtered my novice class so i'm ready for some real competition.

so i'm sorta leaning towards the a032r but can i get some first-hand experiences with these at auto-x? how well do they grip and how many events could i expect of out them?

thanks!

The AO32 is sticky as hell even at 2 years old. Lately there have been tons of wholesalers selling them on ebay for $99 per tire shipped. Nearly everyone in my crew as a set and they are a very good tire. The soft compound doesn't last long at highway speeds but the hard compound is as good as the RA1.

If you are buying tires for autox I would never buy new street tires over used or slightly older r-compound. R compounds will own any street tire no matter how good people claim it to be top dawg.

Also killing a new set of $600 street tires in a parking lot will really pyss a guy off!

I have both sets of tires you currently are looking at getting. I'll be testing possibly the NT-05's (255/40/17) on May 2nd and then the A032R's (255/40/17)the next day on the 3rd. Then the Hankook Z214's (245/40/17)later on in the season.

Reviews to come as the season progresses.

Remember those R comps will not heat up at the autoX. I have seen people on NT01 run slow. I would put money on that a NT05 would be faster. If you would keep heat in the A032r then they would do good.
