Seems to me it'll take a 0.5" spacer. But now I wonder about rubbing the outside of the fender...

Depends on the tires... I would be more concerned about the front wheels touching the brake calipers.

If you run 235/45-17 to 255/40-17 you shouldn't have any tire rubbing issues... again, brake calipers, not sure.

That's just it. Without spacers, I KNOW it hits the calipers. The question is how much spacer does it take to get off the calipers in front. Then, does that adjustment create rubbing issues with 255/40x17s...

If you put a 5mm spacer on there you basically have a +30. If tire rack recommends a +30 with a 8.5 and you have a 9 then your adding about 6mm of wheel on each side. Even without the spacer it should clear the caliper no problem. Rears just keep it the way it is. May need to see if the inside will rub. Now for the tire. You should probably throw on a 245 on the front and 255s on the rear.

I have 18x9.5+38 and assuming the same spoke spacing, you need at LEAST a 20mm spacer to get to +15 to achieve 3mm safety gap on the caliper. For my application I needed a 23mm spacer to make things work. Many people said a 20mm would work, but the clearance was <1mm and VERY unsafe. Unless the wheel is somehow vastly different because it is a 17x9+35, tirerack is just telling you the size to fit under the fenders, not clear the calipers. You need a 20mm spacer. I got mine from Motorsport-tech.com and I was pleased with their construction and have no complaints.

In addition, I have 265 tires and they do not fit by any stretch of the imagination in front. Surprisingly, with a 3mm spacer, they fit wonderfully in the rear. I may roll the fender for safety, but even a slight roll might not be necessary. However, in the front with ~-2.5 deg camber, the wheels stuck out nearly an inch. Well I said 245 cuz a little more tire space up front would be preferable since a spacer might be needed and stick the wheel out a little more. But running a 255-35 up front would be fine too...

17x9 +35 Enkei RPF1 with 245/45/17
20mm Project Kics front spacers

You have to run a 20mm spacer up front or you will hit the front caliper. No spacer in the rear is required.

The front rubs slightly depending on how low you run the evo and how crazy you take a corner.

No rubbing at all in the rear!

My camber is -1.8 f and -1.2 r
