I want to upsize in 17". I have a IX Se BBS wheel. Are they any wider than the stock Enkei's?

Nope, same size. Look into 17x9, 9.5, or 10.

I realize 255's "fit" but do they bulge too much and is handling better with 235's or 245's if I'm using stock BBS 8" rims? Anyone get 255's and then wish they had wider rims? I didnt find those answers on a search.

I had 255's on stock rims for a time and then switched the same 255 tire onto a 8.5 rim. I could not notice any difference street driving.

Ultimate grip is higher with the wider tire. If you AX, then you also have to take into account gearing and sidewall series. I AX'd in 245/45/17s last year in a street tire class. Taller tire gave me more room with my trans. Running a 255/40 r-comp, I have massive grip but lower mph in 2nd from the lower tire.

If its pure grip you want. 255/40 or even 245/40. Gearing for AX street tires 245/45. Snow, 225/50. Replacement 235/45.

What if it's maximum "turn-in crispness" on the stock rim we are looking for? Not trying to beat a dead horse, just looking for the right direction.

Thanks
Tom

245/40 would be the turn-in tire then. Wider, but lower profile.

I am running a 255-40-17 race tire on my BBS wheels. The contact patch is over 10" wide and I don't think it looks bad at all and I am very happy with the performance.

Do I wish I had wider rims..... yes and no. The BBS rims are very light, very strong, and fairly cheap. There are few 17x9" rims that can match two out of three of those. To do better I would have to spend a grip of cash. I think if I were going to upgrade it would have to be to a 18" aftermarket rim. It would look better and be much easier to resell.
