Ideal winter tire size on stock rims

I live in New York, so i'll get some cold weather and will def see some snow. I know 225 would likely be idea for pure snow driving, but I don't want to totally neuter the cars handling / traction ability either.

I notice alot of people run different sizes, varying around 245 / 40 / 17 - for my application what do you think? My car has about 310 awhp on dyno dynamics if that makes a diff.

Well if your just keeping a set on for snow (like I do) why not go as skinny as possible. It wont totally ruin your handling abilities but it will greatly improve the performance of the car in the deep snow and ice. Get the fat ones for the summer, but enjoy the good traction and AWD in the deep snow with the 225s.

When I had my Evo VIII I used a 215-50 17 on the stock Enkie wheels. These are .79 inches narrower but have a .07 taller sidewall. I was really happy with this set-up here in Michigan.

Narrower the better for snow use. I've had a couple people use 225's but most use the oe 235's for snow.

Yeah, I used Blizzaks in the 235 size for all the winters (2) I have owned the car. This year I am switching it up to a set of the Dunlop snow tires in the 225 size, I will report on how it goes, not sure if Ill be able to tell the difference or not...

I've been using 235/45's for the winter and that size works great imo. I wonder how much of a difference there is in traction if I were to downsize to a 225.

LM25 or LM60 for blizzaks? Are the 60 just a replacement? I notice they must be new because they don't have reviews yet.

Thanks for advice, looks like I will 235/45/17

The WS60 Blizzak is a newer model which has special tread compound that actually sticks to ice. Have a set on my Evo are are much better than the older LM25 that I had on previous cars. I actually tried to take an ice cube and yes, it actually sticks to the tire if you try to slide it across the tread with pressure. Tried the same cube on a all season and it didn't stick.

Picked up and just got mounted my 235/45/17 blizzak ws60's.

First impressions (only drove about 15 miles) the car is quieter, more docile - but the ride seems a bit rougher and handling is worse. I'm coming from S-Drives. The weather here isn't wicked cold yet, about 50* today - so I guess I was still getting better grip from my summer tires.

So far so good though, thank you much for the help gentlemen.

Wait till you see how good they do on the snow and ice. Yes, dry weather performance isn't going to be like the Advan's but thats the price you pay to run a dedicated winter. I'd rather stop and take off quicker and have better control on the ice.
