Yokohama W. Drive's are the best winter tire I have ever had. Ice bears... Not so much. Michelins Alpines good, Yoko Ice Guards good, LM-25 good and an older set of yokohama but I don't remember what they were. Those were good as well.

Nokian hakkapeliitta 5

Forget about ICebear or Altimax arctic get these....
For starters have you even tried the Altimax? My guess is no. Look at the tread pattern between the Hakka 5 and the Altimax. See the resemblance?

I highly doubt he needs studs in his tires and if he does he might as well put them in the Generals and it would still be cheaper.

I am telling you guys the Generals are sick sno tires. If course there handling characteristics aren't great but there sno's. Can't go wrong look at everybodies reviews and there prob one of the most least expensive.

Any snow tire will be great in the snow. The difference will barely be noticed on an AWD vehicle. I run the cheapest winter tires I can find because I drive like an *** in the winter and don't expect them to last more than a season.

The police around here use Firestone Winterforce and they seem to be price right.

I ran the hankook W409's on my suby last year and they did wonders over the passes here. I have them on my IX now in a 235 and tested them out in the snow for the first time today and had very impressive results. Worked extremely well and had no issues

Just picked up a set of 225/45R17 General Arctic's myself.. found them over $60 less... shipped even.. I wanted to do my business with Tirerack, but they wouldn't match price or shipping, and my SCCA membership & banner didn't get the price adjusted either. But I guess I got a great deal on a new set, wish I could have worked with TR.

I drove up to the mountains this weekend and did some testing with the Hankook ipike W409's. I'm very impressed. 10 degree incline driveways on a pure sheet of ice is no problem. Of course if you want to pour on the power and break them loose it can be done but just normal driving in the ice/snow they have yet to slip in the slightest. I take on some pretty intimidating roads too. There's very little road work that takes place out here off highway. The backroads are all plowed by regular people that just have plows on their trucks so they can make it to lakes and favorite snowmobiling launching spots. That makes them basically a sheet of ice most of the winter, several inches thick sometimes of packed and refrozen snow with no salt or gravel treatment.

I'm still looking for that big dump of snow that actually challenges them. They've given me some great peace of mind with the car in the winter, worth every penny. I bet I get at least 2 years out of em too. $103 ea at discount for 225/45/17

is going the the 225/45/17 working well? It seems that the narrower tire would do better in the snow even though the stock tire is a 235.

Yes it definitely will, I've used the same tire in different widths on other vehicles, with noticable success, primarily in deeper snow & slush it is noticable. These will make the speedo off a little bit. (Smaller O/D than OEM)

I've run the Hankook 404's in the 225/45/17 size for the last several winters. Never had a problem with snow. I'd buy them again.
