I've got the Dunlop Z1 Star Specs and like them. Chose them not only for the dry traction but also for the wet traction from the Tire Rack testing last year.

Used them at the track a few times, and for a Redline event and really like them. Probably selling soon for a wider size...

Any head to head action on the Z1's vs AD-08's vs R1R's??? Anyone ran all three? Or two of the three?

I love Advan's and Toyo's! I have not ran Dunlops in years! They were ok, but the SP 9000 don't match up to the Z1's

Also, looking at a 265/35-18 for tire size. Anyone got the weights on these three tires? That may also help me make up my mind.

Star Specs are the best bang for the buck, but I wouldn't call them the best for performance. Big difference.

Then please explain why the car that dominated the RTA East street class was on dunlops, and I know for a fact that after talking to one of their crew that they tried other tires.

Winners in Yokohama Tire-shod cars included:

- Billy Johnson, Unlimited RWD Class, FX Motorsports Acura NSX (on Yokohama ADVAN A005 slicks), took first place and won the class championship with a time of 1:36.103. Johnson’s victory also earned him the overall series title.

- Jeremy Toye, Street AWD Class, Reese Tuning/Robispec Mitsubishi Evo X (on Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08s), 1:47.050, beat second-place driver Stephen Ruiz (also on Yokohama AD08s) in the StopTech/AMS Performance Mitsubishi Evo X, 1:49.868. Toye’s win netted him the AWD West championship.

- Clint Boisdeau, Street FWD Class, FocusSport Focus (on Yokohama AD08 tires) took first with a time of 1:56.844

- Dez Ballard, Stock-FWD Class, ABF Performance/Gruppe-S Mini Cooper (on Yokohama AD08 tires), won with a time of 1:59.595

Oh, and in case you were not aware, the reese tuning evo had a significantly better time then the East coast champ, they just had a mechanical failure at the end that caused them the national title...non tire related(oil pump or something like that)

I have driven AD08, A046D, RE-11 all 10/10ths, of those 3, the AD08 is the fastest in all conditions. No experience on the Star Specs or the Kumho/Nitto to date.

For AutoX, Z1's are the better tire. I've driven the AD08 and there is no doubt that it is lightning quick when they are cold, unfortunately after they come up to autoX temps they are inconsistent and slow. From the first run to the third run the Z1's are consistent, manageable and just as fast, if not quicker, than the cold AD08's.

For track it's probably a different story as the AD08 has a chance to recover between turns whereas in AutoX, it doesn't.

Amazed the XS hasn't gotten more votes. My thoughts after extensive experience on both the Z1 and the Kumhos (basically a full autox season on each):

The XS is simply a fantastic tire and a phenomenal value for money to boot. That said, the Star Spec is also a very strong performer, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

What the Kumhos excel at - certainly beyond the Dunlops - is delivering incredible lateral grip. You can carry simply amazing speeds through all sorts of corners and the tires just grip. Their longitudinal grip does suffer, however, although that obviously isn't as much of a problem in our cars. They also lose a bit in terms of responsiveness compared to the Star Specs - the sidewalls is softer, making the tire feel less precise. When you turn in, you can feel a delay as the sidewall rolls, but then the tire just bites in and holds.

The Star Specs were great in their own right but lose some of the Kumhos' outstanding lateral grip in exchange for quicker, more agile responses. The Dunlops are also far, far better in the rain (and the cold), but this won't ever be an issue unless you're actually on track as it's raining.

Both tires are very predictable and progressive in their breakaway characteristics, making it easy to modulate them at the limit. I've noticed absolutely zero heat fade in the Kumhos, and maybe just a little in the Star Specs. Also, my set of Dunlops seemed to fall off as the tires got older, whereas the Kumhos seemed to stay at the same level.

I will warn that the XS is VERY soft and doesn't have anywhere near the longevity of the Star Specs. I was at around 2,000 miles and several events when my fronts were almost down to the wear bars (not to mention severely corded, but that was due to the toe out I was running).
