Nearly everyone runs 255/40 on their evo's without issues. 245/40 is what I would go with for an alternative with a slightly better sidewall stretch. 45 series sidewalls just don't look as good. Since the sidewall number is a percentage of width the stock 235/45 doesn't have quite the sidewall a 245/45 would. So with that size your side would be even bigger than stock.

Rule of thumb 8" wide wheels 225-255 comfortably

9" wide wheel 235-265. 255's will go on either width but they are about the max a 8" wheel can take but still look good.

Being in New York you have to consider the weather. If you're running these one set of tires year round you probably want to stick to stock size (235/45/17) or 245 at the most and get all seasons. 255 is too wide for snow.

I run 225/45/17 on 17x8" 28 offset for winter and 255/40/17 on 17x9" 32 offset for summer.

Great info thanks!. I dont drive my evo in the winter. So I guess Im either gonna get 255/40 or 245/45. Any pic of the 255/40, you said its bulky, wanna make sure it doesnt look dumb....

By bulky I mean they just slightly stick out further than the rims do. It depends on the brand of tires how much some run wider than others, similar to how not all shoe sizes are the same between brands.

These aren't mine. My 255's are on 9" wheels so they fit a little different. These are all 255/40's on stock wheels.

Here's a thread with pics of 255/40's on stock wheels.

Someone else was talking about Dunlop. Normally I'm not a fan of them myself but they do make one of the best if not the best top end performance tires for the evo. The star specs. For the price there's not much better.

I'm looking to get the yokohama neova. If I went with a 255/40 compared to 245/45 on stock height think the wheel gap will look worse then it already is, or shouldnt notice from 45 to a 40?

245/45 if you do the math 45% of 245 is 110.25.

255/40 is 102

The 255/40 will have a smaller sidewall, so more wheel gap. Stock is 105.75. 255/40 is closer to making your spedo right on though.

255 if you're buying a summer tire is the way to go. I'd rather have a bigger fender gap than fill it with tire. Not only will 255 give you a wider footprint for increased grip but with a 40 sidewall you'll get less sidewall flex on hard cornering fighting tendency to roll. So, 255 is the better performance choice. The trade off is less rim protection from dents on hard bumps.

You should get some aftermarket springs. I despise the stock ride height. GTworx or swift. They're not too expensive.

bad idea get 255-40-17

whoever said not to get springs if full of s***

what do you do with your car? autox, drag, road race, nothing?

personaly i wouldnt waist the money on those neovas. get the 255-40-17 donlop direzza star specs and swift springs. it will not handle worse. you dont NEED coilovers unless its a carzy track car and you want to spend alot of money to get about the same outcome.

just my $.02

Swifts sports are nice, especially for the price. That's what I run and I do like them. That said they do drop the car a heck of a lot. About 1.5" in front, .9" in rear.

Maybe that's what you want. If you're more concerned with looks you probably do. GTworx has a recent article about that though and apparently those of use with more than about a 1" drop on stock suspension are hitting the bump stops. In fact during any kind of hard cornering you're on the bump stops the entire time. Swifts offer 1/2" of front suspension travel before hitting the bump stop.

With this in mind GTworx developed a spring that only drops the front less than an inch and so it maintains enough suspension travel before the bump stops to keep a good performing suspension that fights bump steer and doesn't cause the car to ride bottomed out significant portions of the time.
