And you did check the alignment holes on the strut mounts?

So i have been having a similiar issue here. My noise is ranged from slow lazy right hand turns to sharp right hand turns usually under like 40 MPH. I have talked to a couple of people about this, and have had the wheels pulled and checked for possible wheel bearings, and all that good stuff. Nothing stuck out and the noise refuses to recreate when i have a mechanic in the car.
Little History here I just got H&R coilovers installed last july and didnt notice anythign all summer the car sat alot this winter so i didnt really notice anything until this summer.

The noise sounds like metal on metal so i have whobbled, wiggled every loose piece of metal i could possibly find on the undercarriage but nothing really stands out.

The noise does come up on bumps on the rare occasion. No specific environment recreats the sound it just has a mind of its own. Any suggestions? Or anythign specific i should ask the mechanic to check for the next time i get it in?

Thanks

I am in the same boat as everyone else...

Originally, I thought it was a mount, Motor/Trans, etc... then, I thought possibly brakes related,,, now, I am onto checking the suspension pieces... from what I read here, it seems most people are having suspension related issues with this, so I am hoping that is going to be it... this is a real pain

Assuming we are all having similar issues, I wonder what event triggers this... speed bumps at 55mph?

Mine was sounding anytime I stopped the car (from whatever speed) and whenever I took a slow left turn. I checked and re-tightened everything up forward that I could think of but the sound was still there.

I started to assume the worst and soon enough I was thinking that my frame was compromised and that my car could fall apart anytime.

Then I changed the stock suspension to Bilsteins/GTWorx and it magically disappeared. My stock struts didn't look bad and they didn't make any sounds when I was rocking the car from the corners. It was surprising to find out it was the struts/springs.

Did you change the strut mounts to a new set with the Bilsteins?
Many of us are thinking it may be the strut mount bearing causing the issue. Thanks.

Just so I don't go destroying anything... are there specific torque specs for the bolts on top of the struts? I figured I'd give a shot to tightening those up, but just want to make sure i don't "hulk out" and over tighten anything...

My evo viii started making a similar clunking noise mostly during right hand turns but sometimes left turns or just over bumps. Only 23k on the car and definately coming from the front left wheel area. I just got a forged bottom end rebuild on the motor when I blew a chunk of piston through my motor ruining the head and turbo along with the bottom end so I'm a lil tight on cash so I'm hoping this doesn't end up being costly. But I'm taking it in next week to have a new t-case installed so I will have them look into it then.

Yeah, I got a new set of mounts. The only thing I noticed with my old ones was that there was really no grease under the cap. Maybe the bearings got worn down?

I have the same issues and suspect something with my suspension. I'm taking it in to the shop to get it checked out this week.

Also be aware that the pillow ball bushing(spherical bearing) on cheap coilovers often becomes warn out and have play in it, which can also cause the "clunking noises". Usually happens when the coilover becomes unloaded.

The noise has ceased on my stock, low mileage '03. I thought it was interesting that it began almost immediately after I had washed the car in one of those "power wand" type DIY car washes, blasting the filthy wheels in particular, (I usually wash it by hand), and while I don't know for sure, I am wondering if water pooled in the lower strut spring seat, perhaps saturating/interfering with the way the spring moves on the lower spring pad. Who knows. Noise has been gone for awhile now though, we'll see it that continues to be the case.
